True Tales of Stupid Guests: Episode 5 - Uncle Walt's Insider

True Tales of Stupid Guests: Episode 5

True Tales: from the files of Stupid Guest Tricks.

“True Tales: from the files of Stupid Guest Tricks” is an ongoing series, where we share believable stories of park guests’ unbelievable stupidity.

FROM STUPID GUEST TRICKS —

StupidGuestTricks.com is a website founded to provide Disney Cast Members and other theme park employees a place to vent about some of the idiots they’ve dealt with. Most Cast Members will tell you that 99% of the guests they deal with are wonderful, but there’s always that 1% that lead to aggravation — and some pretty funny stories.

Now that Uncle Walt’s Insider has completed its hostile takeover of Stupid Guest Tricks, we can bring you some of our favorite stories that have been collected there over the years. Previous installments: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, & Part 4.

In Part 5, castle confusion, you aren’t a Cast Member? and an unbelievable complaint:

Where exactly are these other castles?

Yesterday, as I walked across the Esplanade [between Disneyland and California Adventure], a woman stopped me to ask what time pyro was and where she should watch it from.

Me: “The fireworks show is framed around the castle, so if you’re anywhere on Main Street where you have a good view of the castle, you’re in a good spot.”

Her: “Uhm… ok. … Which castle? There seem to be quite a few.”

Me: “…”

Me: “…the …big one?”

Her: “Uhm… okay, thanks.”

What do you do for Disney?

I am not a Cast Member, but I am often mistaken for one — probably just because look like I know what’s going on.

I’m with my father-in-law and two tween sons in Animal Kingdom, and I’m also dripping wet, having just ridden Kali River Rapids, when two college aged guys ask to see my pins. Just to avoid the confusion that sometimes happens, I automatically respond: “Sure, but I’m not a Cast Member, so I don’t have to trade.”

Their response baffles me. One guy says, “Really? So… what do you do for them?”

I have no idea what he’s asking. “Huh?”

“What do you do for the Disney company?”

So I’ve basically just denied working for Disney, but these guys are still convinced that I do. They must think “cast member” is just one position, and I must work for the Mouse in some other job. A number of sharp responses to the “What do I do for Disney?” question flash to mind, the most obvious being “give them my money and visit their parks,” but I try to be nice.

So I clarify that I am a guest, not employed by Disney in any sense. They still don’t seem to get it, and wander away quietly. I’m not quite sure how they think a Cast Member would be soaking wet and with older and younger family, but as I said, it happens a lot.

This child has a tough life ahead

Here’s an actual guest complaint from City Hall:

“Nobody told us that World of Color would have lasers, fire, and images from movies! It terrified my child! She thought it was witchcraft and I had to remove her from the area immediately. Shame on Disney for promoting that horrible show as ‘family appropriate.'”
