There's some CMs who won't tell somebody they can't smoke where they are because they are afraid of confrontation. I'm not one of them. I politely tell the guest that smoking isn't permitted where they are and point them in the direction of the nearest designated area. Only rarely do they get upset and yell at me about it, usually they'll put out the cigarette and move on.

That's another thing, sometimes I tell them they can't smoke somewhere and then they wonder where they can put it out. I want to tell them "should have thought of that BEFORE you lit up in the first place, because where were you going to dispose of the butt?"

That would require "thinking ahead."

But to lay into someone in an area where it's allowed, and then to grab the cig? Totally, utterly unacceptable. I too think she should have claimed assault. As much of an anti-smoking zealot as I am, I have a chain smoking brother so I do have sympathy for the darkside.

I think a lot of that comes from the fact that it used to be acceptable to smoke anywhere, and the non-smokers were the minority. I remember when eating establishments and other "public" places came up with the smoking/non smoking sections (like it was gonna stop the smoke at an invisable line!)

Ever check in for a airline flight and they asked you smoking or non-smoking? hehehehehe

and I was a smoker for many years! (had to go cold turkey, totally another story) to this day, whenever I smell someone smoking, it smells soooooo good!!)

I'm not a big fan of smoking (the smell makes me really sick), but I'm fine with people who go to the smoking location. However, that lady crossed the line. She had no right touching that other guest.

When I am working the gates at TL and someone approaches with a cigarette I will politely tell them that smoking is only permitted in designated areas of the Park, provide the person with a map and show them the symbol for the smoking areas, and point them to the only ashtray/smoking area outside the gates.

I have never had any Guest problems with this.

I've always done the thing of getting on the smoker's side when asking. Actually, I've found it works on *almost* anyone.

"I hate to have to ask this of you, but..."

Works like a charm. Except with that one in a hundred SG.

I don't think a cast member should have to tell a guest that they can't smoke where they are. Shorty82 I am not saying that you said cast members should have to tell a guest that they can't smoke where they are, I just wanted to give my opinion on this. If I was a cast member I believe that I would be afraid to tell a guest that they can't smoke where they are.

If not a CM, then who? A lot of smokers simply don't know. They may come from states/countries where the rules allow smoking in public. If it is approached in a professional manner, there should be no problem in 99 out of 100 cases.
