At the old Disney Hyperion Studio, the screening room where animators would show animated scenes to Walt for his approval was small, with no ventilation or AC. Not only was it hot, but the animators were nervously awaiting Walt's reaction to their work. Thus, the room became known as the Sweatbox. Even after the Studio moved to Burbank and elegant screening rooms were offered to the staff, the moniker remained.
Now SGT has a sweatbox of our own. This is the place to find and post all entertaining topics such as video links, jokes, games, and the like. A general rule of thumb is that if the thread is meant to be informative (interesting news stories for example), or a topic for discussion (like setting up a park meet) then it should go in the Break Room, but if the intent is to entertain the masses then it's home is The Sweatbox. I'm sure there will be grey areas at times, so if you have doubt as to where a new thread should go, just use your best judgement and the SGT Staff will be glad to move it later if you guessed wrong.

Ouch! Ouch! Okay, okay, quit twisting my arm! Dole whip, huh? Well, since Susie never got around to sending me the goodies she promised for correctly answering why it's called a passion flower last year....
Ahem.
1.) I'm an Army brat. Some people would agree on the brat part. Or used to.
2.) I could read at college level when I was in junior high.
3.) It took me 35 years to figure out that I did not, nor ever did, have a learning disability. Try convincing my family of that.
4.) I saw the JFK assassination on T.V. It was years before I realized it was a replay, but.... And yes I remember where I was.
5.) Until we went to Australia, I was a happy, smart kid.
6.) The reason I had problems after returning from Australia, which lead to being labeled having a learning disability, was I missed some school, and had a hard time catching up.
7.) We were in Australia for 6 months, Sept. 1965 to Feb. 1966. We left the day that decimalization went into effect--Feb. 14th. I remember most of the T.V. commercials.
8.) I was born in Massachusetts, but have lived in California most of my life.
9.) In the nearly 53 years I've lived, I have lived in five states and one foreign country-Australia, MA, CA, KS, MO, PA.
10.) I have moved, so far, about 15 times. I'm counting only those places where I have lived at least one month.
11.) The longest I've lived in one place was 12 years.
12.) I have a hard time answering the question, "Where's your hometown?" because I really haven't lived anywhere long enough to consider it my hometown. To me, a hometown is where you grew up and spent most of your life. But there's at least two places that would qualify, and I don't live in either one. And I don't intend to return to either.
13.) I've worked on assembly lines, as a security guard, as a mystery shopper, and a ride operator at Knott's.
14.) The longest job I've held was as a stablehand--I cleaned my neighbor's stables for 8 years.
15.) I also once worked as a personal assistant to a traveling music teacher who needed help getting organized.
16.) The shortest job I've held was in a dental lab--I only lasted 3 days.
17.) I also worked as a temp, but never again.
18.) I hope to get my driver's license this spring.
19.) Because of all the stuff in my life when I was growing up, I sucked my thumb until I was 16.
20.) When I was a kid, some of the things I wanted to be were a firefighter (long before women's lib!), a cop, a nurse, a teacher, an astronaut (Sally Ride beat me to it! ;) ), and a meteorologist.
21.) I discovered my writing gift in 5th grade.
22.) My favorite shows when I was growing up were Clutch Cargo, Supercar, Shrimpenstein, Baby Daphne, Sheriff John, Engineer Bill, Hobo Kelly, and a couple others I've forgotten the names of.
23.) Of us 5 kids, only my two younger sisters have married and had kids.
24.) Both my mom and I are middle kids; I'm 3rd of 5 and she's 3rd of 6. My dad is 8th of 9.
25.) I really hoped I'd be in a better situation by this time in my life. Stupid quacks brainwashed my family into believing I had a learning disability. So much living and opportunities wasted....
Okay, that's my list of 25 things. You all can wake up now. I can hear you snoring.

That's awesome. I saw the Dick Grapes -- one of the original Buffalo Bills members, the one who chose not to go to Broadway or the film -- at the Denver convention two years ago.Goofyernmost wrote:Only in the shower. I got into it because my Father was a founding member of our local group in upper N.Y. State. He lived, ate and breathed barbershop harmony. I enjoyed it a lot and still do, but the fun group that I belonged to was no longer available when we moved out of state and the local one took itself way to seriously. They required auditions, etc. and I really didn't want to have to do that. Can't explain why, just didn't feel good about it.
If you ever saw the Music Man you will remember the Buffalo Bills from both Broadway and the movie (Lida Rose, Sincere). The group broke up with the passing of a couple of the members and Verne Green...the little tenor with the huge voice...moved to our area. He didn't officially join the local chapter, but he did go to rehearsals and help with the "so called auditions". I passed the audition, but in the process noticed that they were not having any fun. It was all too serious. I spent a lot of time with Mr. Green getting him to reminisce about the days of grandeur when they were "stars" and in huge demand from fans all over. You could tell just how much he missed it. Sadly, Verne died about 10 years ago of Alzheimers. By the time he passed he had almost no memory of the past. It all just took the joy away for me. Anyway, I am either to lazy or just to detached at this point to have the drive to get back to it.
I'm still relatively new to the whole barbershopping world, but I've learned there are a lot of groups out there of all varieties... some who live to compete, some who gather mainly to socialize, some who emphasize quartets, others that mainly do group/chorus singing. Maybe you'll find a fun group sometime. (I'm blessed to have a serious/auditioned group that both competes and has a lot of fun doing it!)

That's really great that you are in it full force. I did love it and if you are a kid and grow up in a barbershopping environment it's like total emersion. I still harmonize with every singable song I hear.BRWombat wrote:That's awesome. Baritone, ay? SPEBSQSA...Some People Especially Baritone's Should Quit Singing Altogether. Is that still a running joke around barbershopping circles?
Time changes all...when I started I was a Tenor, then as my voice changed, I became a Lead, then the natural progression to Baritone and now most definitely, Base. The four stages of life. ;)
My father had a quartet named The Klose Korders. They went everywhere together to sing wherever anyone would listen. If they stopped at a restaurant for a meal...somewhere in the middle they would break into song. It used to embarrass the hell out of me. They were having a great time. I was too young to see that. Oh, to be able to turn back time.

That's definitely an advantage of a capella singing -- no band or microphones needed, and anyplace can be a stage!Goofyernmost wrote:My father had a quartet named The Klose Korders. Hey, I'm about to post a link in another thread to an awesome Youtube video, a trailer for a new documentary about the quartet competition, but here's the link in case you miss it there.

RULES: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits, or goals about you. You have to tag the person who tagged you.
1. I love to laugh, even at really inappropriate jokes. I find that even in the saddest times a good laugh can help. "Tragedy is just a joke that we haven't figured out yet"
2. I can remember the most random lines from movies and tv and use them throughout my personal life. Other than that I have a really bad memory and forget people's names and sometimes their faces too.
3. I listen to just about every type of music in the soundtrack to my life, except rap.
4. I found that you can be working for next to nothing but if you work with good people you will always be rich.
5. I don't have many regular friends. But I do have a lot of BEST friends. It's very hard for me to be close to people but when I let you in I really mean it.
6. One of my best friends used to be my worst enemy, funny how things work out. Another I would have never expected to be friends with me only to completely surprise me with being the only person to stand up for me at work.
7. I used to have a fear of flying but now I am ONLY scared of loud noises, vomit, snakes, and germs.
8. My roommate is the by far the most patient person I have ever met. I love her to death and would do anything for her.
9. I have a pet rabbit named buster. He misbehaves a lot and I threaten to make stew out of him.
10. I went to NYU for a year, I hated it, and now I work at Disney. I want to transfer to UCF so I can stay in Orlando.
11. My biggest worry is being a disappointment to my family while trying to do what I know is right for me.
12. I had a seizure and brain surgery when I was 15.
13. I've sent a secret to post secret and it was posted.
14. I believe in a higher power but I am not a very religious person.
15. Inside jokes are one of my many life callings.
16. I have terrible body image issues.
17. I went to summer camp in Maine for 5 years.
18. I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs. There are cooler ways to make an ass out of yourself. (But I don't judge)
19. My brother and I fight a lot but I love him.
20. I am extremely close to my parents and I love and respect them very much.
21. I have lived in Miami, Plano,TX, New York, and my parents live in Raleigh, NC
22. Most people don't know that I fight terrible depression.
23. I love my job more than anything, even if my current position sucks. I give my life to the company even if they betrayed me.
24. I'm a hopeless romantic but I am clueless when it comes to relationships.
25. My life hasn't turned out like I thought it would but I'm interested to see where it will take me.

Re: 25 things...
PART I
Okay, I'm gonna give this a try. I might even say some things that no one here knows...
1) As a child I was an awesome singer. I was able to stay on key like very few others my age, key changes, maintain a note and tempo, and I sounded good doing it. Then puberty hit.
2) I love sailing and flying. I've grouped them together because they are very similar. I did spin training with someone who goes up with Sean D. Tucker (the 1-800-COLLECT plane) and they will do stunts to try to scare each other. That was the same day I flew a sail plane.
3) I plan to get SCUBA certified this year.
4) I have had an accidental major drug overdose. My parents had me on Adderal for AD... Oh, look! A flower! On my last day on that medication (by my choice) I went OCD and kept taking the meds. Looking at how much was in the bottle before and after, we came to the conclusion I had taken about 6-700 mg of Adderal (the safe limit is about 120). I realized there was a problem when I decided it would be interesting to become a cutter and had knife in hand. Since, I refuse to use medication that has such psycological effects.
5) I am horrible at math, but I can estimate and be almost spot on.
6) The moment I decided to become a Cast Member, I was 15, aboard Monorail Blue (spell it as you like), Cab 6, holding at Grand Floridian.
7) I've never seen the movie after which our Monorails' Moving Blocklight System is named. :( Growing up in Portland, you'd be amazed at how little Disney is a part of your life. I will be rectifying this problem soon.
8) I both love and hate to write. Every time I sit down to write, be it a story or anything else, I usually wind up very frustrated, and the beginning of the story or paper winds up trashed.
9) I was weeks away from leaving on a USO tour to Afghanistan and possibly Iraq, when the performer I was going to work with had to back out at the last minute. We all wound up staying home.
10) For the above show, I did all the lighting design, and took the entire show's audio/music and remastered it. I also added music and scenes. I was, literally, the man behind the curtain... complete with the booming voice for announcements. I was aired in a commercial for this show.
11) I love cutting up music into bumper music. I don't really know why.
12) Before moving to Florida, I had never spent more than three weeks outside of Oregon. There were times, however, that for my job I would be in and out of Washington several times a day.
13) I've travelled as far west as Maui, and as far east as St. Petersburg, Russia. In one year, I had been in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, England, France, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia and Denmark. During the Europe trip, I saw the sun at midnight.

My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?
