Back where I grew up my internal compass works great. I always knew which way was north and if I got confused and was in town itself I only had to wait for the next helicopter to fly over to know which way was which. See, I grew up in Milton, FL and we have Whiting Field Naval Air Station north of town. Whiting is one of the more important flight training bases for the whole military and if you fly or flew copters in the military you most likely went through Whiting Field. Well, in the mornings the helicopters would fly south from the base right over town to get to the outlying fields for practice and in the afternoon/evening fly back to base, earlier if inclement weather was coming into the area. Copters flying over is a normal thing in Milton and most of the time one doesn't even notice them really because they are so used to them.

My internal compass is getting better but it is still a little out of whack after moving down here. I pretty much always knew north anywhere in the Milton/Pensacola area but down here if I go to a part of town I don't go to often or never have been too I tend to lose north.

I've lived in Southern California for 45 plus years and I have nothing but sympathy for tourists driving our freeways.....heck for locals trying to do the same. I get frustrated when my driving directions say take I-10 East and the freeway signs read: I-10 San Bernardino I-10 Santa Monica. Ummm......hello Mr. Sign Printing Guy......but I'm not a road atlas. I don't have the state's cities memorized as to their orientation from my current position. A simple N, S, E or W next to the freeway number would be great. And what's up with only certain off-ramps having their exit number displayed.....and most of those appear AFTER the exit!!!!

I second that!

Another "peeve" of mine is that if you tune a radio station, they talk about back-up on "Such and SUCH" freeway (local names for them) the only problem is that the freeways are not named on the signs, just the numbers, so you could be driving right toward a major traffic jam and not know it.

how about just use the numbers and direction!

The Weather Channel has, on their website, a traffic flow map. You click on the traffic tab, then put in your zip code or city/state, and it will give you a map with real-time traffic indicators, as well as stars for events, yellow triangles with exclamation points--some of them bordered in red--for accidents, roadway obstacles, etc., as well as indicators of scheduled road construction.

That doesn't do you a lot of good when you're already driving on the freeway!

I think they offer traffic reports on your cellphone/PDA via Notify! , along with severe weather alerts. Don't say we don't have severe weather in California--I've seen them use those severe weather alerts as an adjunct to an Amber Alert.

Now, to go off topic on the same post. In my apartment complex, I saw a car the other day with a license plate frame that said, "My dog is smarter than your honor student."

I was at my veterinarian's office--they had just closed for the day, but knew I was coming to pick up my cat's pills. Anyway, as I waited for the receptionist to get the pills, I noticed a plaque on the wall that said: "Unattended children will be given a cappacino and a free puppy and sent home." I think you should use that in some form or manner as a warning to guests. Think about it. A kid drinks a cappocino, and is bouncing off the walls for the rest of the day. And the puppy would be destroying everything in sight. Fair punishment for a parent who doesn't control their kid while at the vets, so the kid gets into everything--jumping on the scale, bothering other patients and their owners, etc..

Try San Antonio where you could spend your life circling the outside of town. Johnson City, um, where the heck is that on a map and is that the right way. Without google maps where you can do street view I would still be in San Antonio.

Indianapolis has a freeway that loops around the city. Indianapolis native David Letterman started a campaign to get it named The David Letterman Highway. It would be nicknamed The Dave.

Local politicians decided they wanted it named after another pol, Richard Durbin. It's now known as The Dick.
