Re: ATTN: DL And DCA CMs
Any Tavita sightings?
I heard he's having a great time and has run into other friends in the parks.

I'm not going to be seeing him there but I saw you mention the Westin? Is that the Westin in Maui that he works at? We are going to be there in the second half of January 09....
Hope he has a blast at the park :D:

It is the Westin in the middle of the Ka'anapali resort area. There is another Westin farther north but it's a timeshare.queenie82 wrote:I'm not going to be seeing him there but I saw you mention the Westin? Is that the Westin in Maui that he works at? oh ok. I think we are in the 'farther north' one cos it was studio booked through timeshare.hobie16 wrote:It is the Westin in the middle of the Ka'anapali resort area. There is another Westin farther north but it's a timeshare.
He looks really cool though so will try and catch a show if we can! :D:

The Westin timeshare is a nice place. It was purpose built. Ask for the south building as it has more amenities.queenie82 wrote:oh ok. I think we are in the 'farther north' one cos it was studio booked through timeshare.

It's on Airport Beach. The West Maui airport was where the timeshare is until it moved farther north. The beach is about two miles long. Bring your snorkel gear as there's lots of fish to see. There's also lots of green sea turtles. They occasionally haul up on the beach but don't go close as it's a HUGE fine to bother one.
There's a improved path that runs parallel with the beach. It'll take you over Black Rock and all the way south to the Hyatt at the south end of the resort.
I'd recommend both Tavita's luau at the Westin and The Feast At Lele in Lahaina. Both put on great shows and the food is excellent.
If you'll be here in January, TAKE A WHALE WATCHING CRUISE!!!! There's so many of them in January you'd think you could walk back to back all the way to Molokai. You will be able to see them from the beach but a boat trip is the best. I believe Gemini picks up passengers right off the beach south of where you're staying.
I posted my stuff to do on Maui here a while ago but I can't remember where. When you're getting closer to travel time ping me and I'll get it to you.
Remember while you're here there's only one major decision to make.
Beach or pool?

Because I come from a land of many many beaches and reefs we tend to take them for granted...particularly given we have been up to queensland countless times including trips to the Great barrier reef, Hamilton Island etc.
I remember one time I was snokling and I just kept following this turtle drift along and ended up a bit further from the boat than I would have liked... :p:
I've also done whale watching in WA where we were watching Southern Right Whales. Is it humpbacks that you get mostly?
But Hawaii is a pretty special place...and I know that from a brief 3 day stopover once 18 years ago (eek I'm gettin old) I have been promising myself to go back ever since and this is the trip!
Anyways..I would love your info! Although things are booked I've been so swamped with work I haven't actually worked out all the things to do. We only stayed at Honolulu last time (with a day trip to Volcanos NP) so this is really awesome getting to stay for a week at the Westin on Maui. It is a fluke we got it and I don't think we will be back anytime soon!
You mentioned the school year briefly as being different? So is it like us - we run a school year from Jan-Dec (not Jul-Jun) or are the holidays just different lengths.
Anyways...hope your friend is having fun.........and not encountering too many SGs or SCMs :D:

Quennie,
I didn't notice your signature block. Why am I talking beaches to an Aussie? D'oh!!
The whales are humpbacks. The best part is watching the babies. Mom will be lumbering along and the baby will be jumping out of the water every chance they get. The mothers usually come close to shore to give birth. The area south of the Hyatt sees a lot them. As the highway runs close to the water, it means massive traffic jams.
Honolulu is okay but it's really just another city that happens to have a nice beach. The north shore of Oahu is a better place to go.
I found the list of things to do. Go to http://www.stupidguesttricks.com/showth ... #post72022 and also read post #2571.
The school year was modified by shortening summer vacation to six weeks and adding one week breaks throughout the year. There have been some problems so it looks like the summer break will be expanded to at least seven weeks.

Re: ATTN: DL And DCA CMs
lol...thanks :)
No you don't need to explain a beach to me. There are a whole heap of people you DO need to (including the English who class a pebble shore and gale force winds and ice cold water as a beach :eek :)
It is funny hearing the same kind of things I say to people when they are coming here being said when you go there.
Found the posts...you certainly like food ;) I will look up the tour though...sounds interesting.
Of course our dollar just fell into the toilet so there is less spending money to spend...but I'm still looking forward sooo much to it!
(Our dollar was around 1AUD = 0.96USD and is now 1AUD = 0.66USD :( )
