Overheard SG convo

Post by LittleDollClaudia » Mon Jun 30, 2008 11:34 pm

So yeah, I'm here at work, (yay) and I see a father and daughter walking towards the elevator.

She says that ToT looks kind of scary from the outside 'cause of how it's all lit up.

He says to her, "Don't worry, honey. Tomorrow we'll go and see the inside. We'll make sure to loosen your belt so you fly up out of your seat a little. Won't that be fun? It'll make the ride more exciting!"

Wow, another case of parents not giving two bits about safety just to make sure they have fun.

My question is: If little Mary flies out and dies, who pays for that funeral?
:sarcasm mode:

Some people have to learn things the hard way. Unfortunately, in too many cases it ends tragically.

Horrifying! I know how much I fly up during the drops with the seatbelt tight, why would someone want to take a chance on their child coming loose entirely!
Also, said kid could hit someone else!

I got to sit in the Tower tower (where they monitor the monitors, hehe) a couple times and watch them work, and I have to say that those CMs are SUPER impressive when it comes to catching stuff like this. I knew to look for it and never caught it on the screens, but 3 or 4 times in the 6 times I was there (for like 15 min.s at a time) they caught someone slacking their seatbelt IMMEDIATELY and stopped the cab to escort the guests off. They even caught pennies guests had in their hands ready to float. Hats off to the TOT CMs and the SGs they deal with!

On my safari, I have my safety spiel I do before I ever leave the dock, and it ends with, "But the most important thing of all, please remain seated at all times. What's the most important thing of all?"

Now granted, we are about fun here, but that is the second most important thing. I mean, heck, if I think you're going to have more fun, I am going to be downright mean to you. I have moments on the safari where I could be accused of not being courteous to someone, and at that moment because of my lack of courtesy they're laughing up a storm (see: Big Wallaby's Alternate Bridge Show).

But back to my first paragraph, the correct answer to that question, which I just gave you, is not "Have fun!"

If I do it twice and hear that answer twice, I'll explain that the only way we can have fun is if everyone's safe and remains seated, so what's the most important thing of all? Sometimes you get that one that still doesn't get it. Those are the ones who stand up on Croc Bridge, so I speed across it and they complain that they didn't get a good picture.

As Walter is so apt to say, "Dumb ass." If you go over that bridge, everyone on that truck is going to need grief counseling. Including me. Your death will be horrific, at the jaws of creatures that can't even really think, except that there was movement in the water and movement = food. Even worse would be if Animal Care got there in time and somehow you survived.

My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

I don't know much about this ride, but is there any chance that the dad might have been joking? I am sure some people do joke about stuff like this, by saying they will do things on a ride that they would never really do.

Unfortunately, people do it ALL THE TIME. Fortunately, the CMs also CATCH them and escort them off the attraction ALL THE TIME.

Well, there is a SGT that people do all the time on ToT at DCA and CMs don't do anything about it because it isn't really a problem. Don't ride ToT at DCA at dusk unless you don't like being able to see or are masochistic.

Loosened seat belts on ToT are nothing compared to the SRCTs (Stupid Roller Coasters Tricks) I used to see back when I was a member of ACE (American Coaster Enthusiasts). We'd have exclusive ride time, and members would outdo each other in finding ways to circumvent safety restraints, videotape POV footage, etc. My favorite was the guy who had a bungee cord that he used to prevent his lap bar from coming down more tightly during the ride (and he generally managed to have it loose to begin with...some of the parks were very lax during ERT).

It made me shake my head in bewilderment several years ago when a woman died at a park in Indiana at an enthusiast event...she was doing something stupid (standing up, I think) and was ejected and killed on the Raven. ACE immediately distanced themselves from that sort of behavior and swore up and down that they never, ever would condone it and did everything they could to discourage it. Yeah, and monkeys are gonna fly out my ass too.
