Okay, looks like there's a lot of confusion out there between "being on the telecast" and "being the official greeting princesses". There were only three of the latter.

In case anyone wants to watch the film again and see if they can guess, I've hidden the answer below, highlight it to read:

Jasmine, ok I gotta give her credit for some things cause she dared to speak back against planned/arranged marriages. (Good thing she was a Princess cause elsewhere in a Muslim country like her's in that time period, she'd most likely won't be alive to see the next week!)

On the otherhand, Genie keeps coming up with 20th century pop culture references and in the stage show Al shows Jamine the scenic highlights of the modern world, so one can't be too certain.

Considering that the guy was gonna chop her hand off for "stealing" that apple for the child, I would think that a worse punishment may be due for a woman who denied a proper arranged marriage.

I was not really focusing on time period, but more cultural practices. Certain practices (such as the wearing of a burka in some areas of the Mid East) still show that women are still under the "ownership" so to speak of men. So if a women is still forced into full body coverings today, goodness knows what they were thought of in the time period of the film.

But if one wants to get into the actual time - we know very well that it was about when the Sphinx was in the process of being created. If any Historians (or someone of the Islamic faith would be better) can elaborate on that time period, then that may give a good idea as to when the the story (at least in the film) occurred. Sultan also references to Allah when addressing Rajah. From all I know, that is what the people of Islamic faith call their creator. Weather it be in any reference to the Muslim faith, I do not know. All I know is that Muhammad is one of Allah's prophets.

According to the secular one, the Sphinx was built along with the Great Pyramid of Cheops, between 2350 and 2330 B.C.. As for Mohammed, it says he started preaching in 613 A.D., was forced to flee from Mecca in 622, dictated the Quran/Koran in 625, retook Mecca in 630, defeated nomads in 631, then unified the tribes at war with each other, with his successors, or caliphs, ruling over them. So, there's a gap of nearly 3000 years between the Sphinx and the founding of Islam.

That's your history lesson for today.

To add to the history lesson, Islamic law is not the only law to proscribe that punishment for stealing. There was the Code of Hammurabi (circa 1760 BC)
