Definitely is not "canned" air. The ventilation systems in commercial aircraft are really wonders of fresh air. There is piping where compressed "bleed" air from the engine's compressors is fed through an intercooler and then into the aircraft interior. The pressurization is actually controlled by the outflow of air from the cabin. If they maintain an 8,000 foot altitude in the cabin when over 30,000 feet the air in the cabin is completely changed about every 5-6 minutes.Whazzup wrote:I hate flying on airplanes - breathing dirty canned air, etc. I think that's where we pick up germs when we go traveling.

I knew that was the case, but I didn't know the numbers. I thought it was every 20 minutes or so.Cheshire Figment wrote:If they maintain an 8,000 foot altitude in the cabin when over 30,000 feet the air in the cabin is completely changed about every 5-6 minutes.
Geez, with numbers like that, the only thing better is actually being outside (which, you don't want to do on a commercial airliner).
My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

Susi, I don't want to scare you, but it sounds like you need to get to a doctor ASAP. A stiff neck is one of the most common symptoms of meningitis, better to be safe than sorry. I'm sorry you got sick and I hope you feel better soon.

There are air quality monitors in the cockpit. A friend who was a pilot for United told me he could see the crappy air in the smoking section on the monitors. He was always trying to flush it so the F/As weren't dying from the fumes.Cheshire Figment wrote:Definitely is not "canned" air. Don't be fooled by appearances. In Hawaii, some of the most powerful people look like bums and stuntmen.

Nope, but if you're flying in a private plane and your friend says "the plane is yours" leaving you a bit freaked out because you were not mentally ready for it and while climbing out through 5000' you start to hear a loud noise that sounds like wind coming from your left and you look over to see your friend opening and closing the little window, it is ok :D:Big Wallaby wrote:I knew that was the case, but I didn't know the numbers. That is a LOT better than flying in a Bell Jet Ranger, with the doors off!!ktulu wrote:Nope, but if you're flying in a private plane and your friend says "the plane is yours" leaving you a bit freaked out because you were not mentally ready for it and while climbing out through 5000' you start to hear a loud noise that sounds like wind coming from your left and you look over to see your friend opening and closing the little window, it is ok :D:

Wow, that is good to know Figment, thank you! Germophobe (with good reason, my immune system is shot) that I am, I will repeat this to myself like a mantra the next time I fly which is in. . .about seventy days I think? *nervous already*Cheshire Figment wrote:Definitely is not "canned" air. I used to be such a good flyer. Then we did something called an "aborted take-off" and I stopped being a good flyer.
Now it takes squeezing the heck out of my husband's hand and lots of music on the Ipod as soon as I'm allowed to use it to get me through. But I don't drink, so I guess whatever works, works. . .

Courage in your own.

This was during the summer in August, after eating greasy bbq heading from Ada, OK to McKinny, TX. I'd have taken the lack of doors and a nice breeze. It was a BIT warm...GRUMPY PIRATE wrote:That is a LOT better than flying in a Bell Jet Ranger, with the doors off!!

I've yet to experience one of those, just a few 'go arounds' while landing, once on our way to WDW landing at MCO. The first time was coming back from California after visiting Dad, my 2nd time to fly ever. The reason from the Captain "The pilot of the other plane opted to use the ENTIRE runway for his takeoff, enjoy your tour of Dallas while I get us back around for landing."February wrote: I used to be such a good flyer.
