The understanding is that it stays in the sheath, but in that one instance, I'm sure even a cop when be good with their reason for removing them, especially since they weren't used.

In our group we do sword fighting, but it's using rattan swords so that we can actually hit each other and it becomes more of a sport. So, while we don't swing the real things around, we do know how to use them (well those that do the fighting, I do a little, but mostly I'm into the dancing)
I don't think anyone would say anything about self defense. I do remember the moron weilding a samari type sword and keeping the police at bay a few years ago. It was in the news, but they didn't WANT to hurt him as I believe he was a LITTLE confused. I think they used a fire hose on him, and he dropped the sword.

Yah, I KNOW about ratan swords. A number of years ago, I took Akido and got the stuffin beat outta me with them. Ours were split bamboo, ouch! BUT learned how to weild them in defense!! and then attack!!

FUN stuff!!

A friend and co-worker started making his own knives, mostly throwing but also "combat" type. HE was approached by the re-creationist group to make swords and daggers. He made a few, but stopped. He is a perfectionest and made them razor sharp, he also uses a really good grade of steel, and the product he put out, even at cost, was more than some wanted to pay.

Well, Trebuchets, no I don't own one, but I know someone who does. He also owns a Catapult and a Ballista and man are they cool. They can launch a one pound 'rock' about 80 yards. And they don't take that long to load and launch with an experienced crew. Granted the ones I am familiar with are quite a bit smaller than the one pictured above, but depending on which one it is 2-4 people can load and launch it in just a few minutes, I'd have to double check with my dad exactly how long, I've never timed it. So in theory, with a larger treb, you would just need a bigger crew and a little longer, since you'd have higher up to climb and grab hold of the arm. Well, that's how we do ours, but again they're smaller one that size would probably have a more refined crank that could pull it down all the way.

As far as people in Hemet in the SCA, I know several that are there now, most of them have been there for years, so chances are that yes I do know some of them. And yes, Pag is one of them, but I know two families that have been SCA active and live in Hemet, plus a couple that live in neighboring cities. One guy from one of the families camps with us and plays with our big toys. :)

Well, there's a couple of sword makers in our group that are excellent, and someday I hope to afford their swords. They are all of quality that they could truly be used in combat, not that I would. The swords cost 300 up, and the daggers are generally 100 or more. What's even better is they both (the two that I know, I know there are plenty of good quality weapons makers in the SCA) do custom work. My big problem with swords is even if they're light enough for me to hold the hilt is too big to be comfortable. I know they could work their magic and make me a great sword, that could be passed down to my greatgrandkids and I could hold and in theory defend myself with.

And dangit, Grumpy don't post when I'm doing one and then I have to respond so it looks like I just like double posting or something. :)

I seem to remember he was charging about 800 to 900 for the swords and 300 to 500 for the daggers, but he inlayed them with "jewles" and did etchings and filigree. Very good looking stuff but took him forever, as he could only work evenings and weekends, and some processes couldn't be stopped when he started.

As for the posting...Ummm..type faster!

That sounds about right for a good sword. The ones I'm thinking of generally don't have jewels and such and the ones at the lower end are relatively plain, but man are they great swords.

I type pretty fast, you're just a sneaky pirate. (actually my problem is I type too fast and end up running words together, and mixing letters up and such and then I have to go back and fix things

Forgive the blonde moment (or maybe computer not really literate moment) I'm guessing that's a program where, umm...you don't type or something? That would be really bad, my posts would end up taking up entire threads, I tend to babble when I talk, I can control that better when I type cause I can change things. :)

Sorry, Its a program that you install, then with a microphone and headset, you read a passage from a book to "train" it to your voice, then you can open a word processor and "dictate" whatever you want, and it converts to written word. Its kind of twitchy when it comes to acryonyms and similies and so forth. I can dictate a report into a digital recorder, then plug it into my computer and let it run. then I have to take a few minutes to "Proof" for mistakes. but it still saves me a LOT of time.

I have been using it for about six or seven years now, every year they add a few more bells and whistles!! (of course they want more money for the upgrade!!)

So THAT'S how you have a 10 + post a day average!

My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

No it dosn't interface well with discussion boards. Tried it on another board and just gave up. its best if used with a word processor software (Microsoft word or Wordperfect) Initially used it with wordperfect many years ago, as that is what work was using. then they switched to Word 97 in 1998, then subsquently ungraded as changes came out. Its great when I have to travel, as I can dictate notes and reports, upload while at the hotel, etc. and then proof it and save, then when I get back to the office, I only have a little bit of catch up to get my report "finished" and printed!!
