We did our annual People With Loose Ends Dinner. Image One couple from Hermosa Beach, another from Vancouver, friends of our oldest daughter, our favorite bartender/real estate agent/masseuse, our neighbor from across the street with her two daughters, and a friend who just closed on her first home ever.

She was really celebrating! Image

Pre ObamaCare the labor law in Hawaii said employers had to provide health care for anyone who worked more than 20 hours per week. The result was just about every job became part time. That meant working multiple jobs just to make a living.

We'll see how ObamaCare affects the state law. It might finally mean people get to go to one job instead of shuffling between locations.

I see. I thought it was that person's choice, but I agree that not only in Hawaii the no full-time employment for most professions (including mine) causes multiple issues. I am fortunate to be able to work just enough to maintain my health insurance and be ok.
Weirdly, my Disabled son who will turn 26 next month will lose his coverage thru my work, not because we can't prove disability, but we can't prove that we spend more on him than twice his income from Social Security. Yeah, I'm checking on that regulation.

SWMBO and I did something different this year, we went out to eat. Normally, I roast a duck. (Not Donald, yet, but I'll keep roasting until I get him!)

Menu:
Curried apple and squash soup.
Turkey two ways (ropa vieja style and a roulade with candied pecans and dried cranberries) fufu, and shitake corn pudding.
She had spiny lobster on a brown rice risotto with mixed vegetables.
Desert was a white chocolate cheesecake with pumpkin ice cream.
She had a trio of sorbets.
Wine paired with each course, and vanilla rooibos tea.

Clearly, we didn't get this at Golden Corral. We went to Norman's at the Ritz Carlton two miles from the house.

Not bad, if pricy, but perhaps less fun that cooking. I may go check the stores today to see if they have a sale on poultry and cook something just because.

I should have been little clearer. It seems like all the lower skill level jobs are mostly part time ones. Boat jobs, waitress/waiter, bar tender, hotel cleaning staff, stuff like that.

The ones that could be described as professions (Probably one of the most misused words ever. If you're getting paid to do something you're a professional.) such as nurses don't see the part-time weasel deal. Hopefully, ObamaCare will put affordable healthcare within the reach of everyone.

But for the Grace of my Union, There go I.... they are only required to schedule me 20 hours per week. I will say that hopefully everyone will get what they need, but right now the confusion is high...I believe I read somewhere that only 43% of Americans understand that the Affordable Care Act is a law.

There's still a lot of confusion and the web site mess hasn't helped. ObamaCare bugs will eventually be cleared up and it'll do what was intended. Any new program this size is usually painful on initial roll out.

A lady at my church gave me $20 to have dinner at Norm's Restaurant. Man, they feed you enough to properly feed two people--three from a third world country! The unsweetened cranberry relish--whole berry, BTW--was a shock, as I'm accustomed to having sweetened, but at least I know my bladder will be okay! But I couldn't finish my apple pie--no, I didn't people bag it--I swear that slab of pie was enough for two!
Granted, I'm missing having leftovers, though--the last three years I've gotten a Thanksgiving basket from my church, but not this year. That's okay, though--my roomies were here, there, and everywhere. Cookie's been in rehab since August after she fell in the shower and injured her back; C.J. and Diane were housesitting at Diane's sister's place; Kristina said she doesn't do holidays and spent it with a friend; Becky had to be on call for a friend of hers with medical issues, including losing her vision to the point where she can't drive and has to see a specialist. So I was free to go to Norm's.
Not that I minded not having a turkey to cook this year.... maybe for Christmas, we'll see. But boy was Norm's good! The service manager served me, with a bit of assistance from a waitress when he was serving someone else. What impressed me most is how calm everyone was. I've been in sit-down restaurants when the staff was harried and snappish, these folks were totally cool and professional in demeanor. If I had the bucks, I'd eat there more often, though it wouldn't do my waistline any favors.
