Alleged drunk driver causes scare on Philadelphia airport runway

By Ricardo Lopez

March 1, 2012, 3:08 p.m.

Maybe he was lost?

An alleged drunk driver steered his Jeep onto the runways of Philadelphia International Airport on Thursday morning, startling onlookers and forcing the airport to close for about 30 minutes.

Although he didn't make it onto any runways that were in use, Kenneth Mazik caused several flights to be diverted while police worked to intercept his black Jeep Grand Cherokee, Philadelphia police said.

Mazik, 24, allegedly drove through a runway gate fence shortly after 11 a.m. and led police officers and a fleet of emergency workers on a brief chase.

Police said Mazik drove up the length of one runway, crossed onto a parallel runway and drove back before he was arrested. full article
This doesn't surprise me even in the slightest little bit, it's all part of the lovely chaos that's Philadelphia!
I wonder if he thought he was on Top Gear?

Not that Philadelphia International closing is something shocking, that damn airport will go on "Ground Control" if a freaking cloud blows past the airport in a suspicious or 'shady' manner! Don't believe me? Ask anyone who works for the airlines ;)

New Yorkers bitch and moan where ever they move to. We had a New Yorker professor living next door for a while (no longer next door, but still in town, because although he thinks NYC is better, he can't resist the perks he gets here ;) ), and he about went into shock the first time he hit one of the local grocery stores, because it had a much larger selection of fruits and vegetables than he could get at home, at much more reasonable prices. He couldn't get over it. What? There are places that are in some minor way better than NYC? Impossible!

There are some people in NYC who've never been more than five miles from home, which as a Midwesterner who grew up among Corporate Gypsies I find incomprehensible. And somewhere along the line they were doing a survey on high school kids and realized that many black high schoolers there were convinced that blacks are in the majority nationwide, so the reason they saw more whites than blacks in the media was evidence of some kind of Evil Conspiracy. New Yorkers not only think NYC is the center of the world -- they think it's the template for the U.S. :D:

Personally, I have been to New York multiple times and really do not think its that great of a city. Sure it has some nice things but I wouldn't live in that city if I made a million bucks a day.
There are many New Yorkers that would agree with you on this. ;) You couldn't pay me enough to move back to New York state and I would never want to live in that city. As a matter of fact I wouldn't want to live anywhere in New England anymore and that is why I live in Florida now. I don't miss the weather, the traffic, or the rude people.

I'm sure you didn't mean to imply that everyone in New England or New York was rude??? ;)

I'll take somebody from NYC over a up-stater any day of the week. Those from the city I've found to be nice and more able to relax. Those from up-state or Long Island are some of the most rude, most hypocritical, most ignorant people I've ever met.

I'm just glad they're all going to be Arizona's problem in a few years once our crop dies off.

If it's who I'm thinking it is (ICP from 'Down Under'?), I agree with you on that assessment. As for the station assignment chart, well, that one is usually pretty much random. Sometimes it just works out nicely.

Actually they all are to a certain extent. New York City people are the rudest, followed in order by New Jersey, Connecticut, and then Massacussetts. The rest of are tolerable. ;)

I worked with a guy, Jim, from Jersey. He had a bit of a 'tude but was fairly easy to deal with. He also was in the gym every day and had built up some pretty impressive muscles as his shirt always had straining buttons.

He transferred to the Customer Briefing Center where customers were brought in for what we called sheep dip sessions. One day a group from NYC came in.

One of the visitors, Sid, started in on Jim with, what was reported later, a pretty aggressive tone. Jim took it for a while, but finally had enough. He got nose to nose with Sid and said, "What's your problem Sid?"

The local staff in the back of the room freaked out as they thought Jim's next step would be applying knuckles to Sid's big mouth.

Sid immediately backed off and the rest of the presentation went great.

After it was over and goodbys were said, Jim was pulled aside and asked what the hell was he thinking? Jim said, "He's from New York, I'm from Jersey. He knows what the boundaries are and he crossed the line. I was just reminding him that Jersey takes no crap from New York."

Sid's company later bought a few million worth of systems from us.

Hush! I'm telling a story here; don't go interjecting facts!

Unless they're funny, of course.

But since you raise the point about the scheduling not being deliberate, why not?

Not convinced it's rudeness; just different cultures. My Aunt from Vermont complained of culture shock every time she visited her parents in Minnesota -- she'd be getting all weirded out because someone in a store was going way out of their way for her, and then she's relax with, "Ah, yes; I'm in the Midwest, and that's how they do things here." Vermonters pride themselves on their taciturnity and independence; Midwesterners on their friendliness. But Midwesterners don't want to be too friendly; most Midwesterners think Southerners (and Texans in particular) cross the line from "friendly" to "pushy and obnoxious." :D:

My mother, OTOH, despite being a born and bread Midwesterner, loved the South, where "everyone is so friendly," and hated Colorado, "where everyone is so unfriendly." Although after 15 years in the Denver area, she decided they weren't unfriendly; they just thought it more polite to keep to themselves unless it was clear you needed help. She kind of had to concede the point after so many complete stranger Coloradans had stepped in to help us when we were in distress (car accidents, snow storms, etc.). :p:
