My only question is who is the bigger idiot? Murdock, who thought there would not be any public outrage, or the idiot with the highest bid at $925.00 on ebay?

I'd say it's the dumbass who bid $1300 for it.
Oops... I take that back. It's the dumbass who bid $65,100 for it. :notallthe

So true, but OMG this was fast! Could this ebay sale have been orchestrated? I heard all books were going to be shredded or recycled. Optimal phrase "were going to be." Of course ebay could be called recycling.

From what I read in the business section of the Times, all the books were to be returned to the publisher for them to shread/destroy. My guess is that the book being sold on eBay is an advance copy meant to be reviewed by press or one meant to interest independant booksellers. However, anything that was already shipped to a bookstore needs to be RTV'd, and the stores themselves are responsible for ensuring that if they received X copies of the book, they send back the same X copies in order to receive full credit from Harper Collins. If someone pulled a copy or two from the box in the stockroom of a bookstore, the entire staff is going to have their asses in a sling until all the copies are accounted for.

That is an interesting point of view. I remember reading that something similar happenned to Lizzie Borden after she was acquitted of her parent's murders in the 19th century. The townspeople testified to her good character in order to prevent someone perceived as being of good ancestry from going to jail, but once the legal proceedings were over, she was shunned by the same people who kept her out of jail.

In the case of O.J., I don't think that anyone can go too far in shunning/shaming the man, since he seems to have no sense of wrongdoing, no sense of shame. Maybe it still is worthwhile in the most egregious cases; however, I would hesitate to bring it back over issues that might be considered victimless crimes (face it, some women do choose to become prostitutes, and some men choose to patronize them - if both are agreeable, what's the big deal?).

Thanks for the link - thoughtful reading.

Many different issues here, so let me pick just one. I have found that public shame is an effective way to deal with some stupid guest behavior.

You may recall my story of the family that came running down the street in Toontown, leapt over the exit gates at the train station and jumped on board a moving train -- as it came to a stop.

I walked over to them, thanked them for joining us, and wished them a pleasant day here in Toontown, finishing with, "This is your exit."

"No, we're going to Main Street."

"Perhaps, but not by train. People who jump over fences are not permitted to ride. You need to get off now."

"You can't throw us off the train!"

I then appealed to the other guests around them, "How may of you think these folks should have to walk to Main Street?"

Their cheers, catcalls, and insults followed the family as they sheepishly got off the train and left.

Hey, you use whatever tools work for you! If shame does it....
