CM Question

Post by kirbaay » Fri Nov 05, 2004 5:56 pm

Hi, My name is Josh and I am from Oregon. I was reading through all of the posts of stupid guests and what not. I am planning on becoming a cm when i graduate High School (currently a senior) and go off to college somewhere in the california area. I was just wondering is it worth it to work there? Do you enjoy your job? and does the good weigh out the bad? If this is out of place, modetor (or however you spell it) just move my post. It's no biggy. Oh and real quick I just want to put a bad experience i had with a CM at the crap bear ride, i mean pooh. I was there with my parents and my friend and we saw some garbage cans blocking the way of side of the queueing area. So we slid past the garbage cans and got in line. well a CM says "you need to go back and enter the line the correct way." so we were saying wtf? there is no one behind us and this saved us a good 10 seconds of walking. We didnt move anything out of the way, so whats his problem? It was cool though because after that we just said "screw it" and went on pirates instead. I am probably going to get yelled at by some cms about this cause there's too sides to every story but that guy was on a power trip. :D

Welcome to the boards Josh (I need to stop reading the boards while getting ready for work). I think its worth it to work at Disneyland. I attend Long Beach State and DL for the most part works around my class schedule quite nicely. Join us! I'll get you a referral card.

As for the Pooh thingy....
I work at pooh and what you probably slipped through was our "extended" queue. The enterence was oh probably another 5 feet at most. I would have let it slide and given you a "Next time don't do that" speech. We don't want other guests doing what you did so next time use the enterence (it can cause issues when we have a bit of a line) :D

Stupid question for the guest...why is it so hard to walk another five feet? I'm just curious. I go to CSULB too, and I've seen students in the University Bookstore who've basicly screwed up the queue and sent it all catywampus (isn't that a great word?) because they couldn't be bothered to walk a few more steps. I don't understand all the ducking under and climbing over (which seems to be more trouble than it's worth for those of *ahem* rather large girth) instead of taking a few measley steps.

It's not so much a power trip but having the queue/line set up so that it's ready for the next wave of guests at a certain time of day. Trust me, when it's slow, the c.m.'s take them down and make it all nice and short.

As for the job, it's great when you're a kid. Gets old when you're over 30. If you don't mind nodding your head yes and smiling all the time while you're at work, if you don't mind the guests treating you like crap because they think you're some minimum wage peon - what the hey go for it. In my experience (11 years worth), the guests started treating the c.m.'s with more and more contempt as society changed. The social life you'll make as a c.m. is worth it - the headaches from screwy situations aren't. It's up to you.

Am sure Stduck is correct abt Pooh que & the trash cans, however, trash cans are often placed together for a very good reason. They are covering a cude V, U or other issues while waiting for Custodial to arrive with pixie dust & a mop. Best never to move trash cans or any Disney property in The Parks. You never know what you might encounter. As a CM you'll find most guests won't walk 5 feet unless forced - even when it's for their own good/safety.

never even thought about that part of moving cans even tho i use them to cover nasty stuff all the time... Anyway, yeah, when we ask a guest to do something, it's for their own good, we have things set up a ceritan way, and when you try and rebuke out set ups you wind up lost, and or confused.

As for working here i like it quite a bit, it's like high school all over agian, but at the same time not. People don't care so much about what you did just who you are now that you're part of the family.

My confession

One time I was coming out of Flick's and was late meting someone in Sun Plaza so I went through Bug's line and exited where the extended for bugs can start (though I doubt they've ever used it).

Dispite all of the dumb things that guests do I'm glad I work at disneyland. I love my job and really don't know where my life would be if I hadn't applied.

Just a note this is one of my biggest pet peeves!(it probably comes right after guests messing with chains) I absolutely HATE it when guests think they are soo smart by saving themselves that 10 seconds.

And I don't think that this CM was on a power trip it's just that chains/ropes/railings/garbage cans are in place for a reason so please use the open path provided don't make your own.

Sometimes when guests do jump chains or climb over things I
intentionally send in empty cars until I've decided that they've waited long enough. But then again this act of saving time can actually backfire... I just love it when stupid guests think that they are saving themsleves time by jumping the queue at teacups or snow and they actually end up stuck in the extended queue.

Oh yes those queue ropes can be a maze if they don't go anywhere....
I'm with Alice on this that falls into one of my pet peeves which are (for those who care) Sitting/Playing with ropes/chains, doing exactly what I just told you not to do and then getting mad at me because you got hurt and finally people who argue with me about the wheelchair/GAC policies at my attraction. Look people if I am working this ride without a trainer or lead shadowing me then well I passed my PA and I know our proceedures.

Working at Disneyland all depends on your attitude. You have to learn to let things that stupid/angry people do roll of your back. If you can't do that, it's way too much stress to work here. On really crowded days, you might get people yelling at you like every 5 seconds, so you just gotta learn to tell yourself whatever and go on with your day.
