'Supermoon' Visible This Weekend

The Huffington Post

Saturday's full moon will be a supermoon.

A supermoon is a new or full moon that happens to coincide with a close approach of the moon to the earth. Saturday's full moon will be the closest it has been to Earth in 18 years, according to Spaceweather.com.

The distance between the Earth and the moon during the event will be about 221,567 miles, as compared to the average distance of 238,000 miles, according to Space.com.

That may not seem like much of a difference (and compared to the distance it's not), but the diameter of the moon is only 2,159 miles. That means the moon will be over 7.5 diameters closer to Earth than average.

While many believe the 'supermoon' can be linked to natural disasters (namely the Japan earthquake), Space.com says that's not the case. more...

Full moons rise at sunset, set at sunrise. So you should have no problem--other cloudy skies because rain is coming--seeing it. Did you know that the 9.0 quake hit, it knocked Earth slightly off its axis? Our days are now 3 millionths of a second longer. No, really!

I think a similar phenomenon occured with the 9.5 quake in Chile, May 22, 1964. If this keeps up, we're going to end up with longer days and shorter nights.

The earthquake actually shortened the day by 1.8 microseconds. (ref)

Shorty..we gotta get you out of AK park....you have WAY too much time on your hands ;) (even with your missing 1.8 microseconds).

And I am blaming the super moon for my flu....you see once in a super moon do I get taken out so badly that 1)out of work for a few days, 2) do not care that am out of work, and 3) have not even checked for messages. Yep, this nasty bug is the best way for a workaholic to detox (from work) fast.

OK...really am almost thrilled to miss working the weekend of a super moon. People are too bat shit crazy on regular ones...god only knows what a super moon brings to WDW.
