Polar and I just returned from Universal Studios in Hollywood (remember
those APs?) after riding Revenge of the Mummy: THE RIDE! I have to say
that we were somewhat under whelmed, but let me start at the beginning.
(Warning: Spoilers Ahead! Skip to the review section if you don't want to
ruin it.)
The entrance is guarded by two hours figures as you enter a plain grey-
walled outside queue. The line circle around the back of the building
where you can listen to a Indy themed band play "Avalon" (yea I know
out of place but hey it's entertainment). Guards also walk around scaring
little and big girls alike. Both of these positions will be the first to be cut
when the novelty wears off.
As you enter the tomb you are surrounded by hieroglyphics in a dark
hallway. I have to mention by this point you are almost to the end of the
line. Inside there are a few interactive elements similar to Indiana Jones
at DL like a hole that if you put your hand inside will attack you with
Scarab Beetles or a then there is the Book of the Dead that when you
touch it lights change color and you can hear ancient Egyptian probably
telling you to buy souvenirs. Now you enter the pre-show area the coolest
and most annoying part of the wait.
Now the pre-show area is set up very much like Indy (how many Indy
references will this ride have?). There is a switchback part of the line with
a conference class (I'll explain later) rear projection screen showing cut
together scenes from the movies along with some old bat screaming the
curses of Imhotep. Imhotep. Imhotep. Imhotep. God I can't get that word
out of my head! Here's where the annoying part comes in. The name
Imhotep is repeated some much that it drowns out everything else. I
should mention that to this point there is no real story to speak of and the
pre-show does nothing to help that. Now we enter the loading area.
Inside you can see more of the same hieroglyphics and a fucking mine
car?! Who the hell built a mine train inside a tomb?! Be that as it may we
get into the dreadfully uncomfortable things and are strapped down
tightly. Above the cars you can see another conference class projection
of a solar eclipse. And our journey begins.
Disney definitely has the edge on animatronics but Universal is a close
second. The dark ride part of the ride is top notch. As you slowly turn a
corner you are attacked by tons of mummys many of which are reaching
through the ceiling. Another corner and you are in a large treasure room
where you see a conference class projection of the sand version of
Imhotep. Another corner and there he is in the flesh another very good
animatronic. He says basically that your soul is his and you can never
escape. Pssh... Yea right. Launch.
For those having Space Mountain withdrawls this part is just for you. This
is also where the ride falls apart. What is supposed to be the most
thrilling and scariest part is nothing more than a few black light mummys
in the dark with noises so loud you can't hear the music. OH SHIT A WALL!
One big surprise during the was that the ride stops in the middle of
everything and you are surrounded by tons of Scarab Beetles (all
conference class, of course) before continuing your journey backwards.
Now on our first trip through the tomb there was not a wall there when we
stopped but the projector had apparently gone afoul and displayed a slide
that said "Conference Class," sure it cheapened the experience a bit but
it was fixed by the time we rode again. Back to the ride.
So now going backwards on a different track we still are attacked by the
crappy blacklight mummys till you end up in the finale room. A very large
conference class projection of the eclipse dominates the roof, Imhotep
appears in the sky and screams. Smoke and "fire" fill the room while the
car turns around and you are back to give the next round of victims err...
guests their chance to ride.
Review:
Themeing is hit and miss. On the outside it just looks like your run of the
mill sound stage. Other than the obligatory artifact you don't get any
feeling whatsoever that you are entering a tomb. Inside is a totally
different story. What you come to expect from an Egyptian tomb is here.
Inside is all sorts of hieroglyphics and other goodies.
The story line is barely understandable by anyone who has seen the
movie and the pre-show does not explain anything for those who have no
understanding of the movies. Imhotep. Imhotep. Imhotep. Imhotep.
Imhotep. Imhotep. Imhotep. Imhotep. Imhotep. Imhotep. Yah...
Imhotep. I get it.
The dark ride portion of the ride is done very well with elements that end
up being a mix between the Pirates ride and Indiana Jones ride (Had to
get one more Indy reference in there). The effects in this portion were
top notch.
Thr Roller coaster portion of the ride was lackluster at best. If you want a
Space Mountain thrill here this is the place to find it, but there's not much
to see but some blacklight mummys. Barring one big surprise the section
that everyone would come to see this part is a flop and a big one at that.
What could have made the ride better? Well first give me some sort of
story. Any story. I want to know whether I am going into a hot set or a
real tomb (apparently the Orlando version makes this clear). I want to
know why I am getting into a mine car inside an Egyptian tomb. Second I
want to feel a sense of speed whil on the coaster part of the ride. Maybe
add some walls and roofs with a little lighting to give the feeling of speed.
Oh how about a spinning tunnel to add to the delirium... Oh they did that
on the back lot tour.
It's all the little things that make a ride great and this one is missing
many of those things. So if you happen to be in the park already go ride
it you will enjoy it but it is NOT worth a separate trip just for the ride. It's
not great it's "Conference Class."

Imhotep. Imhotep. Imhotep. Just Shut UP Already!!
"A little swordplay, now and then, keeps my mind off sheep!"
"You're messing with my Zen thing, man."
"Dreams are as portals,
flat visions of misty places,
fragments bound below my surface,
but I can write dreams,
they flow from me,
inscribed but now unbound,
I touch them,
and they are real,
and they are real."

Imhotep, Imhotep, Imhotep...
Please attend an English language class before posting any more your blah, blah, blah responses. Learn the difference between "were" and "where", know when to use a comma, and realize that your grammitical skills suck beyond all belief.

Awww... Hell no!
Should that comma been a period?

Okay, I'm confused, was this guy talking to you Cujo, or was there another post that got deleted? Your grammar seemed to be fine to me, and I tutored for 10 years. Okay, I wasn't examining it, but still.
Anyway, so I finally went to Universal and went on the ride. I know what you mean about the Imhotep thing. I had told my boyfriend about the post and about halfway through that section of queue we just started saying Imhotep, Imhotep we get it. It was pretty funny, although everyone else probably thought we were insane. :)
My biggest complaint was it was so short. I was on and was like okay this is fun (not great mind you but fun) and then suddenly it was over, it's like they forgot part of the ride or something.

My two cents
Besides the fact that if this moron was going to attack your post, they should check the dictionary to see if "grammitical" is a proper word. :P
