Particularly at the end of the night, my ride tends to be a walk on. We've had kids ride over and over for two hours. As much as I like my ride, there is no way I would want to ride it for two hours straight. At some point kids need to understand that it isn't just about them. That being said, there's no reason to drag a child commando style through the park. I hear a lot of parents tell their kids, "let's go do xyz, and then we'll come back." To me, that is a reasonable compromise.
That is for sure reasonable, I agree. My brother and Dad loved bumper cars when I was a kid. So my Dad would take my brother and they would seriously do bumper cars all. day. long.

My other two sisters would go off together to do thrill rides.

I stayed with my mommy because I get motion sick on a swingset and hadn't discovered dramamine back then, and we would wander around, look at all the cool stuff, maybe do the merry go round if I was willing, and eat waffle ice cream sandwiches :)
We're all about compromise!

So now I'm grown up and I go with zero plan, and ride Carousel of Progress four times in a row because I can, and I will not do that to my kids when I have them. IT SUCKS.

Good for you! I asked my bf what he wants to do when we get to WDW on Friday (woot) and he said - 'I'm just not getting up early.' Seems his Mom would make them do rope drops when he was a kid and he HATED it, lol. He has no desire to plan either and since this is the first time in 7 years he has agreed to go to WDW, I'll do whatever he likes! :)
