Crutches in Parks?? To Much?

Post by Just Jack... » Mon Jul 26, 2010 9:36 am

Myself and some other CM's are coming down to DW in Aug, and I am so torn and embarrassed to say this, but I am in need of 2 knee replacements, and I use crutches when I cannot walk locally. Now I am older then the "kids" I am coming down with, (but not mentally!! lol) and I hate the thought I might have to use one of those EVC things...either that or I will have my crutches. But in Aug I am thinking it is going to be to much...
So should I walk in complete pain, or embarrass myself and use a EVC? lol..

I cannot think of any other way to keep up with everyone!

I would say don't spend your time in the parks in pain, get the ECV if that is what is needed to prevent the pain. My parents both have issues that make it difficult for them to spend a week walking in the parks, my Mom typically rents an ECV and my Dad usually brings a cane as his usually isn't as bad and the cane is enough. You shouldn't be embarrassed to enjoy a trip to WDW just because you need an ECV.

If you're worried that using an ECV will make you a SG, don't be, the SGs in ECVs would be SG without them.

It sounds like you are what they had in mind with the ECV rental.

Don't be embarassed, just use one and enjoy the parks.

the only think I might suggest is to find one locally before you go, and practice driving it. From what I have read, A lot of problems happen with the driver of the ECV being unfamiler with operating one of them.

good luck!

I agree, you sound like you NEED an ECV, don't walk in pain it will reduce your enjoyment of the parks. Plus, you don't know what damage it can do to the work they have done on you. Rent the ECV and go enjoy.

The average person 'walks' 5 to 7 miles a day at WDW. Unless you normally use crutches that much, you can actually damage the nerves in your armpits if you try to do it.
I say go with the ECV. I would actually recommend renting one from off property. The price for renting in the parks is $70 a day, with a $20 refund when you bring it back. There is no guarantee of one being there available to you. The ones in the park are also slower than regular ones!

The advice to try some out at home is great! Practice backing it up, and weaving between obstacles.
Go and have fun, not pain!

Go ECV, but carry the crutches in case you need to whack a SG!

You might want to go to http://www.disboards.com and look at the "disABILTIES" Forum, which is about the 17th one down the list.

One of the first items there is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which gives lots of useful information and links. Post #2 deal extensively with mobility problems and discusses both on- and off-site rentals.

Ditto. Go electric. I've used both Walker Mobility and Care Medical for my father and liked dealing with both. Free delivery to your hotel -- very cool.

Also, be sure to get copies of the Park Guides for guests with disabilities. Those will tell you which attractions are mainstreamed, which you use the exit or an alternate entry, and which you may as well give up and walk into. Saves much time.

And yeah, the disAbilities forum is actually an excellent source of information, despite some other parts of that Board.

Pain management-get an EVC. Add a snow plow on and move the SG out of the way! Crutches for 5 to 7 miles can cause the armpits to ache. Good luck with the new knee replacements. :)

haa haa...I rented from Walker. I have done disney with crutches before, I ended up in bed with a migraine! And that was just walking around the Beach Club!
It is so hard to admit when you are in need of something like this...
and I do not want to be one of "those" guests just not wanting to walk...lol
but all you have to do is look at my knees and you can see all the swelling, it is kind of yucky!
thanks everyone, do not feel as bad!
now if I can rent a trike, that would rock! I guess my harley days are behind me.. (well at least for this summer:D :)
