Ropes and rails are there for a reason!

Post by Shorty82 » Sat Jun 20, 2009 10:26 pm

This afternoon I was in the Firehouse during the parade. Right in front of there is a reserved section (for whom I don't know anymore, used to be for the Grand Marshals when the parade ran in the other direction) marked off with ropes. This woman was in the section and during the parade decided the duck the rope between her and the parade for a picture or something equally unimportant. Naturally I tell her she has to get back on the other side of the rope as she's in the parade route. She gets mad and starts telling me she spent X amount of money and something about there being people in the section there shouldn't be. Who is in the section isn't my worry, that's PAC's job. My job is to sell stuff and keep guests safe (which is the #1 job of all CMs).

I tried to tell her it was for her own safety but she wouldn't listen. A GR CM who was in the shop by the front doors and saw what happened stepped forward so I walked away and let her handle the guest. I don't give a damn how much someone spent, I'm not going to let them risk getting run over by a multi-ton parade float. I wanted to tell the guest something along the lines of "and it would be a shame to spend so much money and have your vacation ruined because you got ran over by a float". AFAIK no guest has ever been struck by a parade float and I don't want it to ever happen.

On my way out tonight I ran into a Photopass CM I know. He told me he had been shooting by the Rose Garden a little earlier and apparently a lot of guests jumped the railing and crowded into the Rose Garden. He said no manager or coordinator came by the area for 45 minutes and he couldn't leave to call security or anybody. Finally a Main Street Ops CM came and cleared the garden out, right in the middle of fireworks. The Photopass CM said the rose bushes got trampled. He said he's never seen that happen in his 4 years at Disney, not even on the 4th of July or other holidays. I feel sorry for the horticulture CMs who are now going to have to repair the damage to the rose bushes caused by SGs who don't understand that there's a railing there for a reason.

Around here, however, we don’t look backwards for very long.

We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we're curious…
and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.

I have seen my share of SG climbing on the walls on BTRR. Some SG were climbing up the sides to see who can get to the tracks first. Yup! They made it, cast members had to e-stop and have the SG removed for their safety. It's too bad that they closed down Discovery Zone, they would had fitted in perfectlly.

I HATE when guests can't follow the rules/safety instructions, and leave their common sense at home. Because who in their right mind would WANT to stand in the middle of the street with a ____ton float coming their way.

This was the one thing that drove me crazy while doing PAC- people who HAVE to get across the street now, even though there is a crosswalk just down the way.

I was working New Years Eve 2007/2008 at Main Street PAC. I was assigned to the hub corner ( where the lfoats make their right turn into the hub ) and I was ushering guests off the street and onto the side walk... The lights just dimmed out due to spectro entering my zone, and a guest and his family came walking down the center towards me... I nicely asked in my very best Disney voice... Please step onto the side walk the parade is comming....

Guest: "I dont have to do a GD thisng you tell me to"

ME: "Sir.. you and your family need to be on the side walk for your safety

Guest: What part of what I said dont you understand...

ME: Sir... you and your family are to be on the side walk now.. the Parade is behind me and the will stop the parade, turn it around and cancle it... and all 70k guest that are the park will be looking at you! now please get on.....

Guest: How about I meet up with you in the parkinglot when you get off and we settel this......

MK Security: <taps guy on shoulder> How about we have that talk here... no get the *********** on the curb now.. or ill just get Orange County here and we will take this down town for making threats.....

ME: <Smiles>

Bravo. Wish they could be everywhere at once, and act this forcefully when needed.

It never fails to amaze me how SG these folks can be. We have a favorite place to watch the MK parade at night. Invariably, as the parade nears folks start trying to cross in front, between and behind the floats. I have real sympathy for the CM's trying to deal with them. It also amazes me the number of these folks who think that they're are going to get between me and the safety ropes when the parade starts. "I'm sorry. What part of NO Way did you not understand?" That's why I have a grip on the rope, Bozo.

This is why crowd control CMs should be issued tasers.

And that reason is NOT to sit on, climb on, swing on, shake and jerk around hitting others in line ect. Just stand still in line, walk forward, then board the ride.
