Flag Retreat SGs!

Post by DisneyMom » Sat Jan 24, 2009 3:44 am

Last Sunday we made a special point of going to see the Flag Retreat as we wanted to try to get pictures for someone. The areas around the flag were already filling up, but we were lucky enough to find a couple seats with a good view.
The Band came toward the area that security had been clearing in preparation, when I heard a group of teenagers (many wearing purple shirts) laughing- a couple girls from their group were following the marching band very closely in parody. They were so closely following, they ended up disrupting the band as they fell into their final positions. The Band leader had to gently push them out of the way, never missing a beat, but I was really ticked! I saw no adults with this large group, but I kept looking over hoping they would be escorted out-hopefully they were afterward, as we went into the Emporium immediately after and they were gone when we came out.
Other SGs- Two from another country, one of whom kept shoving into my husband so HE could get a better picture, and another who in her eagerness to steal my husband's seat SAT ON MY PURSE  (she was tired of standing in front of where I was sitting and blocking MY view). Both of them had arrived AFTER the ceremony started, and left before it ended, the one sitting on my purse decided to leave because my husband was blocking HER view. I was hoping one of the pins in my purse would lose its back and poke her in the @$$
We still got some good pictures, it is ALWAYS a great ceremony, and has extra meaning for those of us with family in the military and hoping to get them home safe to stay.

I had a boxy little purse on the ground next to me and a woman set down on it. I was staring as how did she not feel pain from a lunch box sized purse under her butt. SGs seem to feel no pain until the lawyers have visited them, lol.

The Flag Retreat brings out SCM's as well... Most CM's follow proper procedure and stand facing the flag, either with their right hand over their heart or rendering a military salute (I personally opt for the latter), but many times, there'll be a CM or even a group of CMs, almost always from Foods, brazenly crossing Town Square as the national anthem is playing.

The only time it doesn't bother me is when the CM in question is from Health Services and they're responding to a call. There's no excuse for anyone else.

Edit: I just realized that I need to acknowledge that being a US citizen isn't a requirement for being a Cast Member, and non-citizens aren't expected to have their right hand over their heart, but they still should be respectful and stand at attention.

There's no excuse for anyone else.
If I need to go clock in, I think my country will understand if I'm walking to the computer. Because unfortunately, Disney does not understand if I'm late because I stopped for my country. However, any other time, I stand at attention and honor the Flag.

As for the Pledge of Allegiance, I will intentionally turn my back and continue to walk around with my hat on and my right hand wherever I want it to be as my own personal form of protest. Until the Pledge is restored to its proper form, I will not utter those words...

I agree entirely.

I have three issues with the Pledge of Allegiance:

One, I don't like pledging to a flag. I'd rather pledge to ideals, or the Constitution, or something. Not a flag, which is just a symbol.

Two, it's taught to schoolchildren before they know what it means to take a pledge, and it's presented in school as if you must say it. I learned it in kindergarten, which is certainly too young to seriously give allegiance. In theory they can't force children to say it, but in practice, it's a very rare school that allows its students to opt out. (I was sent to the principal's office in junior high for refusing to say it. I wasn't being disruptive; I stood up with everyone else. I just didn't want to say it. Unfortunately I was too young and crabby to put forth a coherent argument about respect and freedom of speech, so I just glared at the principal. What can I say, I was twelve.

Three: "under God." Those two little words very specifically exclude me and everyone like me. As McGintoy points out, they weren't in the original Pledge; they were added in the 1950s out of paranoia about Communism.

I remember seeing something on the news about this. The student's father did not like it and had his son go out of the room. The school was ok on it.

I remember growing up in the 60s and 70s, I remember there were some of my classmates who refused to stand for the Pledge. It was basically over Vietnam and America's role in it, among other things. I would make another comment, but I think I will stop here.

I love how some believe that the "attempt to remove any reference to God from the Pledge is an assault on the freedom of religious speech." [http://www.pledgeundergod.com/] They even go on to say "The United States was founded based upon Religious Freedom, not Freedom from Religion."[http://www.pledgeundergod.com/profiles/ ... der-god-to] This same argument was used in favor of California Proposition 8; I saw signs up during the pre-election period that said "Proposition 8 = Religious Freedom."

The "Religious Right" needs to go away...

I have seen when the flag retreat happens on MS. All cast members must stop what they were doing. Pay attention to the flag and then when security is done folding the flag and walking away, you can go back to helping the guests. I have seen people walk down the opposite side of the street and walk where they have to go. :D:
