Was sent this today by a friend of mine.
What strikes me as odd is how someone got a hold of 20 whole nuts of Nutmeg (that's a lot of jars if it was bought pre-grated), and why anyone would want to make this cake, which besides being poisonous, would have a ridiculously bitter taste.

Whole nutmeg is sold to people who use nutmeg graters. It would cost about $15. If the person put the nutmeg in as whole then the odds are that people would not have ingested that much. Disgusting though to eat probably

What I want to know is how can anyone EAT a cake with 20 whole nutmeg nuts in it? Nutmeg is a pretty potent spice and a little goes a long way.

20 nuts would be bout 120 grams which would kill 2 people and make sick 3 to 12 people at most. It is a solid nut so they only got what leached out of the nut during cooking and thus the whole nuts probably were mostly intact. Normally people use graters for grating nutmeg and the medical stuff about toxicity is based on a person eating pure ground nutmeg. It is very likely that the cake was pungent but not that bad. Also note no deaths reported.
I will make sure next time I get a recipe to double check and usually quadruple check on things. Most recipes have an original version with local versions then those versions are changed until you have something totally not like the original recipe.

Back in the 60s and 70s people used to sniff nutmeg to get high. It looks to me like they need to edit their recipes, as well as test them, more thoroughly. That wouldn't get past most American magazines' recipe sections.
