Let's Ignore the Giant Sign, the CM, and the Big Bins!

Post by glendalais » Mon Feb 25, 2008 3:49 am

The past week, I've noticed the oddest thing.

People have been coming into my location wearing those lovely 3D glasses from HISTA. This despite:
  • the spiel at the end of the show telling people to drop off their glasses
  • the CM at the exit telling people to drop off their glasses
  • the giant sign telling people to drop off their glasses
  • the big trash cans into which people are dropping off their glasses.

Too many SGs assume one of two things. One is that the glasses will magically make everything 3-D (isn't it amazing that when you look down the street with these glasses it looks 3-D. ;) ) The other assumption is because they look like sunglasses they work like sunglasses and you know how SGs like getting free stuff. But BOTH of these assumptions are wrong. The 3-D effect is in the film and projection system not the glasses. And since the two lenses are polarized at right angles to each other, as sunglasses they are a total bust. One lens will be blocking sun glare and the other won't.

Maybe the glasses make them impervious to CM instructions. I wonder how cool they think they look. The newest marital aid is the 3-D glasses from an amusement park.

On the other hand I HAVE seen people dropping their garbage into the 3-D glasses bin. At least they are not littering. ;) It is so nice to get a pair of glasses that had someones snot rag lying on it. Please tell me they spray them with lysol or some disinfectant between shows. PLEASE TELL ME THIS (even if it is not true, it will make me feel healthier! :p: )

Or should I wipe them down with my Wet Ones before placing them anywhere near my face?

Yeah, I have seen this, I think they just want to go home with them and then when that cool 3-D movie comes out or they show it on TV, they think, "Hey, I won't have to pay for these and can watch that movie with these cool ones from DL or WDW!", except they then proceed to lose them in all the other stuff they have lifted from Parks and the glasses are never to be seen again.

I thought they put all those glasses in a big tray and ran them through a machine like a giant dishwasher. That's why they are in those trays when you pick them up.

eh, same deal at Philhar. You know, those glasses are property of the parks and you can ask for them from guests that have stolen them (at least here in wdw, we get glasses returned to us from city hall on occasion). By the end of the night, we usually lose between 3/4th of a show and a full show of glasses just in broken ones thrown into the bins.

We have a much bigger problem than guests TAKING the glasses as we do them using the return bins for trash. now, throwing a park map or plastic packaging isn't a huge deal, but when you throw a half-full soda cup, mickey premium bar, pb&j sandwich, and *yuck* dirty diapers, then ya we got a major problem. we have 4 bins, and we usually pour 2 bins into one so we only have to carry 2 bags into exit. of course the nasty stuff is usually at the bottom of the last bin, so in addition to the glasses already in the bin, it ruins all the rest since we can;t see it until we pull the bag. Whenever we have some sort of bodily fluid left in them, the bag of course has to be sent to the cleaners. For a week or two we only had 2 bins because one was being cleaned, and the other one ripped (I'm told its due to someone throwing a switchblade in the bin, not sure how true that is), and our spare 'magically' disappeared months ago.

Philhar exit is fairly relaxing, especially if you have someone tasking or on light duty in there with you, or its early/late in the day and the shows are running to 70 people. Its also the most disgusting position!

edit: All 3D glasses (Inlcuding philhar, muppets, bugs, SSE postshow, and now toy story mania) all send their glasses to Epcot to be cleaned every night, since Magic Journeys (where HISTA is now) was the first 3D film on property in 82/83, they built a glasses cleaning location there. When Magic Kingdom got Magic Journeys, they decided (partially due to cost, partially due to space) that they would just bring all the dirty glasses at the end of the night to Epcot for cleaning. I can assure you that the glasses you are getting when you pick them up (at least at philhar, cant vouch for other locations CM's or setup) have not been worn by anyone in the show that day. We have rare occasions where people try to exit the lobby and put their glasses back in the trays, but if we see it we put them in a dirty glasses bin we have inside the merge closet.

THANK GOD FOR CLEAN 3-D GLASSES!!!!!!
It is terrible the amount of garbage I have seen people put into those bins. I will usually say something to the person. "That is the bin for the 3-D glasses!" or "That's not a garbage can, that's where the glasses go!"
And those bins ARE labled very well. Some people are lazy and rude. It must be a nightmare to clean that crap! Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel for you. :(

My boys and I have a goofy routine now whenever we go see a movie in Disney 3-D. I'll "demonstrate" how the glasses make everything look 3-dimensional by holding my hand still a few inches in front of their eyes and opening and closing my fingers, and then when they put the glasses on, I move my hand in and out towards them while doing the same opening and closing of the fingers. Cracks them up every time.

LOL I am pretty strict about getting glasses. Word is that if you look into the sun with them on it will burn your corneas. Plus, they are Disney property so I get them back. Yes all glasses are cleaned at HISTA. That is a position they put up some days where you spend an hour out back in the maint. bay cleaning glasses. Then in the morning a CM takes to truck out to the parks to switch out the glasses. As for guests "missing the sign" it is a consistent problem EVERYWHERE. Why would you exit a theater through the doors that are closed? I have to make a special tag on my exit spiels to say "and ONLY through the doors on the right." Sigh...SGs strike again.
