Stupid Broadway Tricks...

Post by CMGUY89 » Thu Feb 21, 2008 1:15 am

EDIT: I posted this in the wrong forum. Can a mod move it to breakroom? Thanks!
Ok this is something that really irritated me. I had a friend who was auditioning for NYU today in town and we decided to go see a show and I was able to get tickets for The Little Mermaid. This is the third time I've seen it and I still love it. But I was APPALLED at the behavior of the audience! Parents brought children (although someone brought an infant, which struck me as odd), and naturally children were excited to see Ariel so they talked a little bit. The woman next to me (who might have been hitting the sauce a little) very politely shushed a girl who was talking with her mother behind her. This is well within your right as a paying audience member. Then the mother proceeds to pick a fight with the shusher by saying loudly "My daughter is 6 years old and is just excited to see Ariel!"
Neighbor responds with "Well I am just trying to watch the show"
Mrs. Loud retorts with "She is just a little girl who is excited! She's 6."
Neighbor doesn't say anything and I assume it is over. Mind you this is going on during one of my favorite songs and I have missed most of it.
Mrs. Loud, desperate to get the last word says "If you don't like it then you don't belong here in a children's show, She's only six."
I snap and say "Well I am 18 and you are both acting like children. Shut up."
For some reason when people fight I get really upset. It must be linked to my social anxiety but I was just furious for the rest of the act. Not to mention people were taking FLASH pictures during the show! This is prohibited by New York LAW. What part of the announcement wasn't clear? Grr, sometimes I hate people...
Thanks for letting me vent, I feel better now. I am going to sleep, I am up way too late considering I have to survive economics tomorrow. Good night all!

Thread moved. I know what you're talking about... it's like the people who get on cell phones on my truck, especially when I can hear them. Unfortunately, because of some way my brain is wired, I start to repeat what I am hearing instead of what I want to say. They never do get it.

The rest of the people on that safari paid good money to come and see the Safari, and if they're loud enough they cause me to give a bad show. So that I don't start parroting, I will just shut up and speed up. I had one guy who got on his phone and hung up as we were approaching the poacher scene. The normal time for a safari is 19 minutes, and I was done in 15, having not said a word besides where I spoke to Wilson. I even tried giving the guy dirty looks, etc.

Why people think they need to get on their cell phone on a spiel attraction is beyond me. Maybe they think I am a recording.

My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

IMO using a phone on any attraction is not appropriate, whether or not it is a spiel attraction. I always put my phone on vibrate when in the parks so it doesn't bother anybody while on an attraction if someone calls. With all the background noise the ringer is hard to hear in the parks anyway. I only use my phone outside on the street, never on an attraction or in a theatre.

I have had this kind of stuff happen at the Kennedy Center over and over again to the point I declined to renew my membership and decided to stop donating. I had one too many evening spent where the little old ladies were sitting there talking during the Symphony and eating POTATO CHIPS!! The had the gaul to ask me if my daddy gave me the tickets to the event (most were higher levels of giving private events) and acted rude, after all a 30 year old could not possibly be doing well enough or cultured enough to be involved in the Kennedy Center. Bunch of old hags, its MY bacon and MY pan thank you very much

After the last batch of old biddys chatted with each other on the cell phone during a swan lake performance I had words with the membership director, wrote a scathing letter to the management and sent them no more checks. Kids can be shown how to behave but the mature adults drove me crazy.

Wow, goes to show you that SG's ARE everywhere. You have much more restraint that I would have had!!

The name "Disney" seems to attract the SGs in droves. We saw "Lion King" several times in Chicago, and the flash photographers were out in droves. At all of the performances, people would have tons of kids who would get extremely fidgetly and restless. I know it's based on a kids' cartoon, but it's a loooong play and not really all that appealing to kids for three hours IMO. Literally a quarter of the theater would be empty after the intermission because parents would leave with the bored-to-tears kidlets.

Lion King the Musical is not a children's event. There are parts that get slow. I love the play, but if I was a parent, I would not take my kids unless they were the very patient type.

If it was any longer, I would say it was irresponsible to take kids to Nemo (musical).

Exactly, Broadway is not the same thing as the movie. People need to realize that Disney has age recommendations for the shows for a good reason. Mary Poppins is a little darker than the movie, Mermaid is also a little more dark/suggestive than the film. Every time I see it I am annoyed that parents refuse to take their kids out when they get fidgety, scared, etc... I don't intend on sounding mean but not everything is appropriated for children and therefore it is up to the parent to make those decisions and be respectful to others around them.

SG parents never bother to check the show content before using it for baby sitting services. As I have mentioned I worked in a movie theatre right after High School. One of the shows that was a nightmare was when we ran Fantasia for almost a month one summer. All because of the "Disney" name, and the fact that it was the only show below the R rating in town, we got a busload of youngsters dropped on our doorstep (with no parent in sight) at opening at noon time and they would be there all day, every day until 6ish. First they had seen the show several times on day one but were still there every day for a month. Second preteens grew very boored with classical music almost immediately. So we would be breaking up fights, stopping foot races in the upstairs mezanine, stopping the opening of the fire exits, and generally dealing with the entire audience NOT being in the theatre all day. And unfortunately the management (who never once set foot in the building durring the day for the entire month) was impressed with the number of tickets and candy being sold and didn't care that all the employees were on the edge of mass murder every day.

I don't think you are sounding mean, its the reality that when something goes from the big screen to broadway, and elsewhere, it is NOT the same thing. I think a lot of people are simply expecting a live version of the movie, and do not realize that the director may have other ideas!
