The Down Fall of Disney Media (pt 1 )

This post is one that has been brewing in me for a LONG time. I am an avid fan of family style television, a style that not only teaches a lesson but also entertains its audience.

I'm not going to date myself by telling you that as a child i loved watching growing pains and golden girls ( yes.. i know... laugh it up... I still think Bee Author is HOT :twisted: ) but i am ashamed to see that some suit in the media division has decided that its more important to show shows thats more acceptable for a profit then sticking to the ideals of the Disney media framework as set forth buy Walt him self.

I mean do you really think that Walt would by Power Rangers.. i mean WTF...

Why on Gods Green Earth would Walt show kids shows at 3 in the AM and take the vault off of DTV. Dont even give me the "but kids on the west coast are still up.." Disney has multiple DTV's running in sepperate time zones.... whats being watched in Orlando is not the same as whats being aired in Anahiem.....

Of course, with DVR's a lot of people record stuff to watch an a more reasonable hour! DW records a lot of english TV series that she watches when she is able too!

From what I've seen, I've been rather impressed with Disney media programming over the past few years...but before I make my argument...which network are you refering to that airs children's programming overnights?

I agree about the programming, and maybe that the whole idea about late night programming IS for people with Tivo/DVR's! I know that DIL uses hers to record Disney stuff for the grandkids, and lets them watch it! (after homework etc.)

We were recording boy meets world on, I think the Disney Channel, at 1:30am. We managed to see the entire series (at least all of the episode they aired) over like a summer.

I would think that would be smart of them to do that, that way they are still filling the time slot, but using "less in demand" programs!

I agree.

And is it all about money? Of course.... Walt Disney is a large entertainment company and they'd be stupid to have it be about anything else. Children's television is competitive, with a number of channels being dedicated to 24/7 children's programming. To stay competitive and build the brand, they need to offer what kids want to watch at all hours of the day, or the kids will watch Nickelodeon faster than you can say "Hannah Montana".

It's not about what Mr. Disney "used" to do. After all, it was Walt who said "You don't build it for yourself. You know what the people want and you build it for them." The kids don't want the cartoons many of us grew up with. They do want Power Rangers, Hannah, High School Musical. And, since Disney knows what it's doing, that's what they'll get.

Remember, this is the same company who stewarded Walt's dream of a family place where he could take his daughters and turned it somehow into Pleasure Island *gag* which, I remember Walt being quoted somewhere as saying that in Pinnoccio that Pleasure Island represented everything he hated about the Carnival industry. . .so Disney execs took that and thought great! Let's make it a major attraction at WDW!

My biggest beef with Disney media is the cheap, tacky sequels.

Why did they have to do a half*ssed sequel to Cinderella, which is perfect and should have been left alone.Then, they turned it into a quarter-*ssed trilogy!

And then, even when they manage to make a new modern classic like POTC, they manage to screw it up. Don't even get me started on how depressed I was after watching At Worlds End.

I moped for days. Days, I tell you. At the end my whole family stared at each other and said, "We did not just see that happen to Will Turner."

My only regret is that I didn't walk out during the opening scene with the hanging. I was so shocked, I couldn't get out of my seat.

I don't know who they're listening to. . .Hannah Montana started out cute but now, when I see that kid up there gyrating around on top of a piano I worry what may happen to her in a couple years.

If not for Ugly Betty I'd have nothing of modern Disney tv programming to love. . .yes I know it's ABC but to me it still counts.

And, am I the only woman on the planet that cannot stand Grey's Anatomy, btw???

Bru, didn't you see the outtake at the end of At World's End after the credits? Will's curse has run its course and he comes back!! And Elizabeth and his young son are standing on the headland waiting for him! Very romantic.

I don't like Grey's Anatomy, either. Buncha whiners and dysfunctionals.
