Plans are being put into place to name the next Navy aircraft carrier after George W. Bush.

That picture reminds me of the April Fools edition of my university's newspaper from a few years back. They always have a number of joke articles and one was about instead of sinking the USS Oriskany, turning it into an artificial reef they were going to turn it into a floating golf course. They had a picture in the article that looked a lot like the one in the post.

Back when the Japanese were flush with cash and buying everything in the US, one of their purchases was Pebble Beach Golf Course, the home of the often photographed Monterey Cyprus. A rumor started that the new owner was going to dig up the Cyprus and turn it into a bonzai.

Serious water hazzard!!

I was trying to find the one where they superimposed a flying saucer on the deck of a carrier, claimed that ufo's were helping in the war effort!

Do the Japanese still own it? Do they have American managers running it maybe? I'm just curious because when I was there a few years back (`03-`05) I didn't notice any Asian presence and all the managers and everyone I met were all quite WASP-ish... But there's always the possibility that maybe I'm oblivious.

The Defense Language Institute in Monterey uses that same tree as a symbol, but they call it the "Learning Tree" probably because none of the people in charge of the base have bothered to "Learn" what kind of "Tree" it is! :p:

I was under the impression that a resession had hit the Japaneese economy a while bace, and some of the extravgances were being sold or pared back.

It was sold by the Japanese after their economy melted down. It eventually was acquired by an investor group led by Clint Eastwood, Arnold Palmer, and Peter Ueberroth. They tried to expand into wet lands but were denied by the Coastal Commission.

It's Clint Eastwood, not Chuck Norris!

If it was Chuck Norris, the wetlands would have got up and moved themselves.
