Stupid School Administration Trick
So I was over at TalkDisney today (they've done nothing yet to deserve the Brand D appelation), and there was a parent asking for tips on... get this... getting permission from the school to take their kids out of class to go to Disney World.
You know, when I was in school, my parents didn't have to have permission from the school to do anything with me, as long as it was within reason... While, "Hey, we're taking Bryan out of class to give him heroin," would never have flown, going to Disney World, or Hawaii, or other places was all okay.
I guess my question is this: At what point did the school system (Rush Limbaugh calls it the screwl system... I think I'm going to really have to agree with him now) gain the right to tell a child's parents that they couldn't take their kids out to go on a family vacation? Since my dad only got vacation time when I was growing up at times when we were in school, this would mean that I would never have gone anywhere in my childhood. And to say all the travelling I've done has shaped my outlook on life and people would be a huge understatement.
I'm interested in your thoughts on this. Am I just crazy, or has the school system become the screwl system?

My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

Re: Stupid School Administration Trick
This is a tough one for me, as I was taken out of school for the entire month of february each year for a family trip to florida. While it didn't effect my grades, I think it hurt my older brother and sister. I was upset because I lost the role of Annie in the school play because I would miss too many days to go to Disneyworld one year.
I personally think the school system gets screwed in this day and age. When we were growing up, the school was not put through the ringer to raise us. Our parents (and our friend's parents) raised us. Not sure about you, but if we acted up at a friend's house, their parents could swat our asses and were encouraged to do so. Now, parents would sue.
That being said, I think parents want the schools to raise their kids now. Given that responsibility, they have the right to dictate when the students should be there. Parents bitch because their child doesn't have basic life skills, yet say they are taking little billy out for 10 days for vacation.
I don't think a Disney trip offers any educational value (Epcot can, if done correctly, but how many parents are going to take the time to teach their child about each country?)
I don't think the schools should say a parent can't pull a student out, but I also don't think that teachers should HAVE to give makeup work for unexcused absenses. I also think it should be up to the teachers discretion. If it is an honor student with parents that are involved, yes, give them makeup work. If it's a helicopter parent that thinks their little brat deserves candy like the kids that do well just to not hurt his feelings...well..not so much...

but you don't count Vixen. If i were to ever give birth, between you, Wallaby, Wombat and Ktulu, i know my kid would be fine in the event of my death.
They would also learn fun things from Uncle Darph and Uncle (or is it Aunt?) Kwah...but just promise me that you wouldn't allow those two to have the child more than one weekend a month...
Seriously though, you are the exception to the rule, so we can't count you...lol
Great thread by the way (that you linked to)...i should sign up over there...help me pick a name

I remember reading a post just like the one youi are talking about. If it's the same one then the people are in the UK and they have to ask permission from their child's school. They also go to school year round.

Some acquaintances of mine take their kids on vacation whenever it works best for them. They have the attitude of, "If we can get the absence excused, great. If not, oh well, our time together with family is more important." I've always admired that.

I agree. My daughter is going to be missing the last 2 days of school in May so we can go to Disney World together. It will probably be just me and her when we go so it will be extra special.BRWombat wrote:Some acquaintances take their vacations whenever, with the attitude of, "If we can get the absence excused, great. Yeah, my view is that, if you are the type of parent who would take your kid out of school to have family time at Disney World, then you're probably ("probly" for those of you from Texas) not the type that is letting the schools raise your kids... and that's where my problem is.
I think I'd take Wombat's friends' view.

Re: Stupid School Administration Trick
The role of the teacher is to assist in educated my child. It is MY responsibility to make sure she is raised correctly AND that education works.
I saw a stupid parent at a toy store today. Her daughter is playing with a toy, and she goes "you already gots that one" and then tells her friend "she learned please and thank you cause of that toy." I walked away telling my wife (unfortunately not in front of her) "funny, we taught Abby please and thank you."
So apparently it is not just the teachers job now, but also the child's toys job???
