There must be thousands of stories like that. Here's one.

I worked for Pacific Telephone years ago. One company in our area had a telephone operator that was a real piece of work. Downright nasty. The switchboard installed was a model that had been modified to work with a switching system but still had unused features designed to work as a manual board including a crank that would ring a telephone when spun.

One long suffering repairman was working on the board one day and finally having enough of the operator's rants, tells her, "The problem with your board is caused by low batteries. Have you been spinning the charging crank?"

She goes ballistic as no one has ever told her how to keep the batteries charged. So, for the next two years, she spins the crank for five minutes every morning.

It all comes crashing down when, one morning, another repairman is in early to perform some maintenance. He watches her spinning the crank and finally asks what she's doing. When she explains he replies that the telephone system doesn't have batteries and tells her what the crank is really for.

The fireworks would have done DLR proud. Luckily, she couldn't remember who told her to charge the batteries in the first place.

The wife of my dad's friend used to work for customer service of the local power company. Now, this is at least 35 years ago. One time, in the summer, she got a call. The guy on the phone said, "My power is out." She replies, "Can you tell me what street/town you are in, so I can check to see if there are any other power outages in your area?" He replies with his town and street address. She says, "I'm sorry sir, I have no other reports of outages. Can you tell me what you were doing when the power went out?"

His no-bullshit sincere reply: "Well, I bought a new air conditioner (a window one), and it has three prongs on it (120V, but grounded, not the very old style two prong that are/were in very old houses) so I got out my drill and drilled a hole for the 3rd prong, and after I started drilling, the lights went out."
