Walking in a Winter Wonderland....

You freakin' lowlanders thinking you're tough in the "Mile High City"... ;) When I lived in Colorado, I lived in Fraser...that's the next town over (less than two miles) from Winter Park. Those towns are *2* miles high, and Fraser has (had? it may have changed since then) the coldest recorded temps in the lower 48 states... And then after the military, I lived in Montana in a town known as the Snowmobiling Capitol of the World. Three words for y'all: Polaris RMK 900. I'm not really into motor sports, but for getting around snowy places and having fun doing it you just can't beat the Rocky Mountain King series sleds... And if you can't afford the 9's, the 6's and 7's are both pretty nice too... I've ridden them all. Used to take a 700 to my band's practice space from work every night. The cops there overlook the locals (not tourists though) sledding drunk too, so they're great transport to and from the bars! You'll do a whole lot less damage on a sled drunk than in a car...

...of course, now I live at Sea Level, so I'll probably go visit my old CO and MT haunts sometime soon, go to jog a block and be completely out of breath... :p:

I feel like a total wuss complaining about 30 degree weather and having to wait 5 minutes while the windows defrost. :D:

we hit 50 degrees this morning and I made my daughter wear knit tights and a heavy jacket to school.

It's all in what you are used to. That hit me most when one year as I was leaving WDW for the drive home :( I heard on the radio "dig out your winter coats, it's gonna be COLD today. It'll only be getting up to the low 60's. 24 hours later I was pulling into my home and heard a local weather report. "Hey folks, the weather is gonna be great today. A real heat wave. We're gonna get all the way up to a plus 5 today!" :D:

Love Fraser -- "The Icebox of the Nation." I spent a glorious vacation there a few weeks (in August, though :o :) . Beautiful country there.

I had my motorcycle when I lived in California. Never did ride it in the snow, just floods and rain... And you're right, Denver does not get too much snow. It's just that this week we have had 3 storms in a row with only a few hours of sunshine and it is butt cold, no matter how you look at it. 15 degrees is chilly! And 2 degrees overnight is even colder!
You definitely have to get used to the altitude when you come here after being at sea level. That is why we do better on our trips to DL and WDW. We can go and go and don't have to catch our breath as long as my back holds out which is a LOT less than my oxygen levels! Our red blood cells are carrying so much hemoglobin we can keep going like the energizer bunny! :D: That is why all the Kenyans win the marathons, training at 10,000 ft in the mts. They can run forever at sea level.

Actually, I recently talked to an old boss of mine (had to call him a few months ago to let him know that people would be calling him about my security clearance again...) and he tells me that it's nothing like I would remember anymore. Apparently there's been a problem with bugs (Pine Beetles, I think he said...does that sound right to anybody?) Anyway, apparently the bugs were there when I was there, but they were kept to a minimum because of the extremely cold winters. The bugs live inside Pine Trees (the Lodge Pole Pines all around that area) all winter, but they most of them are supposed to get killed off by the freeze going deep enough into the trees. Now, because of global warming or something, the winters aren't getting cold enough, so too many of these bugs are surviving the winter and then, when they're active in the summer, they're killing all the trees! Bill (my old boss) told me that just up the hill from where I used to live (just off the highway--Winter Park Lodge II) where we used to play Disc Golf (frisbee golf) is all dead and ugly now! It's so very disappointing. He told me that many people are expecting the majority of people to leave those areas and sell their property in the very near future and, eventually, it'll be a ghost town! :(
