5 police cars torched so far. Isolated skirmishes continue. Police response is very restrained. Thinks really flared up as Obama & co started landing in their choppers at downtown summit site.
The wife and kid spent the afternoon at Toy story 3 (against my wishes). Managed to get home without incident or traffic.
Traffic is getting back to normal on some streets. Monday cant come soon enough !

More protesting today. More than 550 arrests and counting. Summit is now over, and VIPs should be departing by evening.
Cops doing a great job at keeping yahoos at bay.

This morning they arrested about 75 of them at a university residence. They came in as a group, rented a residence, and when the police moved in they had a good supply of sharpened sticks, bricks, rock and billiard balls. Very convenient that they needed their beauty sleep! All in one place at 4 am!
Broken windows on yonge st are boarded up, Starbucks and Tim Hortons keeping all downtown branches closed till further notice - the police will starve !
The subway reopened this morning, but may close again if the violence resumes.
Much of the demonstrating is happening at the detention centre. Now they are demonstrating against their friends being arrested. More tear gas used there.
One woman who had been arrested was complaining on TV that the cell they held her in had both vertical AND horizontal bars! and it was too cold.
As I walked home last night many bars and restaurants were open, and patios were packed just a block from the destruction. Lots of gawkers out on the street.

I assume this is legal in Canada? If it were the US the ACLU (and I) would be all over it.

Only legal on a one week technicality. It would appear that there is a law on the books that makes it legal for police to demand identification at "public works" sites such as city hall, court houses, police stations ect. and failure to produce could result in aprehension.
Apparently the police chief quietly got the province to declare the security area a public works zone there by making it legal to demand id.
Come tomorrow it will no longer be legal....

Yep. Police will continue to be in the area through Monday evening, but are starting to pull out. They don't have broad-ranging powers anymore, though.
The Globe and Mail:
Extra police to stay in Toronto at least another day
On a side note, is it just me or did someone really screw up in scheduling for the
Queen to visit Toronto while it's still cleaning up from all the mess made this weekend.
Don't get me wrong, I love Her Majesty, but she has quite possibly the worst timing ever, lol.

The Queens visit is timed to coincide with the running of The Queens Plate north of the city. She does love the horsies !
On another note there is another mass protest that started at police HQ (a block from my house) and is now headed south on University. It appears that the march intends to "take back the zone" now that the fence is being dismantled, and the temporary law has expired. Update: now they are at city hall....
Protesters are refering to the temporary prisoner holding and processing facility as "Torontonimo Bay"! They feel that the jail like conditions are too harsh. Duh??? Its a temporary jail ! One woman complaining on the news about both horizontal and vertical bars on the cell ! Half of todays protesters are complaining police went to far on the weekend. The other half are complaining police did not do enough.
Helicopters buzzing overhead. Lots of sirens. Gonna be a noisey night.
Have a look at youtube for a lot of amateur video. Be aware that much of it edits out the part where the protester throws a rorock at the cop, just highlights the cops taking down the protesters. Editorial bias is alive and well in the amateur videos online. I say some of the events live on tv, uncut. then when they put them on youtube they cut out the part with the police being attacked and provoked, and cut straight to the response. Not very responsible "journalism".
Thankfully we have been been able to sheild my daughter from any of the visuals of this mess. Our visit to WDW in August cant come soon enough !
