Coming into the home stretch now...

Number 3. This one's a doozy.

My family and I are in the preshow holding area for Mickey's Philharmic, close to the doors. (But not too close -- if we're the first ones in, we have to go all the way across. Stand back a bit, and you get closer to the middle. So why can't the SG's figure this out? Why is it that the ones most likely to stop in the middle of the row are also the ones who have to be right next to the doors on the way in??? But I digress.)

Anyway, there's a large family nearby, with 3-4 adults, and five kids, all around age 8 and younger. Minnie's already announced that the doors will be opening soon, so... what better time for the adults to break out bagels and start coating them in peanut butter and jelly???

Naturally, the bagels are ready to go just as the doors open. The adults look a bit startled that this didn't turn out to be the ideal time and place for a leisurely snack, and shove the bagel halves toward the kids and say, "Everyone take one bite!"

I guess I should be grateful that they weren't prepping the snack to eat during the show, but still.

Keeping 'em rolling:

Number 4, courtesy of two guys in the Animal Kingdom who mistake me for a cast member. Now, if you've followed my trip report at all, you know that I am mistaken for a CM a lot. It's uncanny. And it happened more on this trip than the previous two combined -- so much that I stopped keeping count.

(My most often-said phrase this trip, always in response to "Can I see your pins?," is "Yes, but I'm not a cast member so I don't have to trade." A few say "Really?" but take time to look at and compliment the pins, which is nice. Most, though, scowl and say "never mind" or just walk off.)

Still, mistaking me for a CM is usually an honest mistake, not a SGT in and of itself. But the two 20-something guys that approach me on New Year's Day as my son Brandon & I are walking back towards Everest (following a good soaking on Kali River Rapids) go above and beyond, and into SG territory.

"Can we see your pins?" they ask.

"Sure," I reply, going into automated response mode, "but I'm not a cast member so I don't have to trade."

"Really?" one of them says. "So... what do you do for them?"

I have no idea what he's asking. "Huh?"

"What do you do for the Disney company?"

I'm baffled. I've basically just denied working for Disney, but they are so sure I do they think "cast member" is just one position, and I must work for the Mouse in some other job.

A number of cutting responses flash to mind, the most obvious being "give them my money and visit their parks," but I'm too nice sometimes. (Hey, they're just asking questions, not trying to butt in line like the kid at Soarin'.)

So I clarify that I am a guest, not employed by Disney in any sense. They seem disappointed and walk away -- back to their own SG world, I guess.
THAT is intersting that you keep getting mistaken for a cast member. Is it the lederhosen you are wearing in the queue of Small World? ;)

I wonder what it is. Do you wear khaki pants and a polo shirt that might look like a costume of some sort, guest control or whatever? Interesting that it keeps happening. Maybe the Big Cheese is trying to tell you something. It is time to stop all that legal beagle stuff and live a little...become a beloved CM at WDW! :D:

I probably dress nicer than that average park-goer, but nothing close to a CM costume. I do wear a "guest of honor" oval badge, which is CM-like, except that it's red -- and the rest of my family also wears them. I'm a big guy, 6'5", over 300 lbs, non-CM facial hair. I often wear a ballcap and I'm carrying a deluxe PassPorter and often a backpack. Yet I am repeatedly approached and addressed like a CM.

Not that I mind too much. If I can help the people without revealing their error and causing them embarrassment I do it. I think you're right that I'd enjoy being a CM for the most part, and if I could make it work I would. I did find myself looking for ways to make some magic for others -- taking pictures for them and the like.

Maybe in retirement.

Well there it is. People see "badge" and assume (yeah I know what that makes out of you and me..lol) that a guy wearing nice clothes and one of those tags is in charge. Most people dont know the rules for facial hair, etc for CM's. Interesting that they dont approach your wife. Must be the thing that is ingrained into a lot of people that a man is in charge. Hmmm, be interesting to do an experiment on that.

I personally dont like the idea of the guest of honor badges being allowed to worn in the park. Dont get me wrong....they are cool and I want one big time...but I have seen quite a few "TIPS" on keeping your kids safe in the parks and teaching them to go to someone with that type of badge on. Kids dont notice color as much as shape of something when they are panicked about fiding momma. Heaven forbid they should get some weirdo. Maybe an alternative would be not to allow them to be worn on the chest. Yes, I know policing it would be a pain, but no more so then cigarettes and heelies.

Same thing like I and others have posted that if you wear a lanyard in the store (doesnt matter if you are in uniform or not) that you work there and some wont take no for an answer.

The first couple of trips thta DW and I got the free lanyards and pins, we were approached!! Which is wierd as my "vacation" attire is always kahki shorts and bid dog hawaiian shirts! At first it was funny, but then after a while it got silly, thats when I would always direct them to the main gate, for whatever then needed!! (hehehehe)(except for kids!, I would try and help them!)
