While on vacation in Truckee I helped a crashed bicyclist. He had crashed just at the entrance to Donner Memorial and although he had a helmet, I think he rang his bell a little too hard (he couldn't remember the date). He was too agitated to lay still so spinal precautions went out the window...I left when FD took over.
Hope he's ok!

I ate it after a long decent leading to a nice sweeping curve. Unfortunately, there was a wet spot at the apex and my rear wheel broke loose.

Results:

Fractured clavicle
Fractured ribs on left side
Punctured lung
Possible bruised heart

I was wearing a helmet that gave its life so I wouldn't be a veg.

Personally, I find the drivers in Connecticut and New Jersey to be worse. The streets are bad, and I don't know about the cow paths, but a lot of it is because the city is old. You can find simiilar (and worse) things in Europe. The roads were built before there was a lot of traffic, and as they made bigger and bigger buildings in the middle of more and more traffic, things get, well, interesting. I usually park somewhere on the outskirts and take the "T".

I once heard driving described as one of the greatest examples of mass cooperation anywhere. If you think about it, it's true. A huge number of people sharing resources, while hurtling around in deadly machines, with no common goal other than they all want to get where they are going. The commentor observed that it's amazing it all works as well as it does. Sure, there are a lot of ass..., um, well, let's just say "uncooperative" people who are at the root of frustration anger and accidents, but they really are the minority. Perhaps in countries where corruption is rampant, there is even more self interest than here, so things break down more often.
