He told me that the Alaska state trooper that responded, called a local butcher. If the meat is salvagable (yes roadkill!) the state pays for it to be butchered, and they give it to the poor.

I know they're trying to be nice, but... :puke2: ...

My in-laws in Oregon say they give the meat of the deer who get hit on the road to the families who need it. In our current economy, there may be more people lining up for venison

One of my best friends not infrequently prepares the roadkill herself. She just skinned a big deer last week, and now she has a lot of venison in her freezer. She also brain-tanned the skin.

She also says that raccoon is best when barbecued. As a vegetarian, I've never proven this myself, but I trust her word.

Yeah, roadkill has a stigma, but the truth is that a moose getting hit by a car or truck is gonna die (and destroy the vehicle, unless it has the heavy steel guards) and the meat is still useful. And as you can tell by the current governor of Alaska, Moose meat is much sought after. (its also very good!)

I remember when riding the train from Denali park, one of the conductors was saying that after a heavy snowfall, the moose will walk on the track (out of the deep snow) and it wasn't uncommon to hit a lot of them.

Of course, the train messes them up a bit. but then again, the bears can have a good meal too.

hey its a "circle of life thing!"

I like lizard chili, but it's hard to get the scales off.

Whats wrong with road kill? Especially after you were the one doing the road killing.

I got a very tasty doe that way. I even have the pelt on my computer chair.

Used everything I could, left little behind (and got the truck fixed on the insurance companies dime)

When I lived in Corvallis Oregon, the deer were not bright at all. They would wonder through the hills into the neighbor hood. One day on our busy intersection a deer decided to run across the street causing a 5 car smash up. The deer was fine, the cars...That was a different story.

I don't know...it sounds like the deer was trying to even up the score!

I was people watching today while I was at Disneyland. I saw this kid's shirt. It read: Really, I don't know where my sister is. The sister is taped to the back of the shirt and her mouth is taped too. I had to laugh, it was funny and made my day. :D:
