Which is why if/when Little Wallaby and I have kids, I may not really let them have access until they have proven to be really good READERS of BOOKS. Classics, self improvement (but not *all* self improvement books that you find at Borders), religion, politics, the arts, anything in which they have classic learning. They will be well-rounded. They are NOT turning out losers like so much of my generation... for far too long, that included myself. Sorry, was that too harsh?security officer wrote:yrsh the right to be stupid
My generation so much lacks the hunger to be better, and it has sickened me for a long, long time.
And if you're on this site, it lowers your chances of being that segment of the population I was just bashing.
My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

Good save. :D:Big Wallaby wrote:And if you're on this site, it lowers your chances of being that segment of the population I was just bashing.

Don't be fooled by appearances. In Hawaii, some of the most powerful people look like bums and stuntmen.

Note that it doesn't eliminate, though at this time I don't know of anyone here who fits that category. But I didn't do it as a save. Had I, it would have been in the next post or something. :p:hobie16 wrote:Good save. :D:

At the Disney Family Museum, we have the miniature collection of Shakespeare's works given to Walt's daughter Diane.
One of the twenty-somethings asked why would anyone want a book that small, I offered that "In the old days, people would keep miniature books in their waistcoat pockets for reading while waiting for appointments and the like."
"Weird!"
"Well, they didn't have Twitter or texting in those days."
I rest my case.

I think it is a bit alarmist to say that the whole of humanity is doomed based on a few recent events.
That a child was accidentally served alcohol? Now if it was done deliberately, or (again) more often, that would be reason for more concern.
Now, having traffic control workers falling asleep is disturbing. However, I have to wonder why they are falling asleep? Is it the fault of the workers, or is it something like they are being forced to work unreasonable shifts, causing them to not get proper rest?
As to sports fans getting violent, that is something I think we really need to look into. Rooting for your team is one thing, but there is a clear difference between supporting a sports team and becoming so obsessed with it that you commit acts of violence and destruction because of your "devotion".

Agreed, Patch. And as far as my view on my generation, that is not from just this conversation. I've had it since shortly after I left high school.

As someone who still carries a paperback for just that purpose, I would counter that the problem with miniature books, is the miniature text!!! I'm nearsighted enough as it is!!!
