My take on Epic Mickey vs. Kingdom Hearts:
Actually, Kingdom Hearts didn't really re-brand Mickey as an adventurer. It did give us a great adventure that didn't seemed "kiddy-fied". However, Mickey was not seen often, even though when he is, he is definitely not a timid mouse.
Epic Mickey, on the other hand, does have Mickey front and center. From what I can piece together, it is taking Mickey somewhat back to his roots, when he would be up to doing things like building his own plane or traveling to the other side of the mirror. It seems to have main stage areas that are connected by old-fashion 2-d platforming mini-games. Of course, the details I have are sketchy, and could be wrong.
