I hope it doesn't end up looking like Waikiki, with highrises crowding the shoreline and restaurants and tacky shops lined up elbow to elbow.

Any idea who owns the vacant property on the other side of that line of trees? Hopefully it belongs to Disney so they can expand the resort if it's successful.

I am looking at the sketch for the resort, those palm trees...How tall are they? I see the guests are much smaller in scale. Would we be guessing at least 500 feet tall? If it was that tall, it would hurt if something fell on you while walking.

Palm trees have a root structure that puts hundreds of small roots out. They look like they've been woven into the ground. That makes it almost impossible for them to fall over.

The actual palms won't be much taller than thirty feet. The drawing is seriously out of scale.

The one thing you should worry about is falling coconuts and palm fronds. If not kept trimmed they can do some serious damage. We have some royal palms that drop some huge fronds that sound like a car crash when the come down.

One tree I'd hate to be standing under is a jackfruit tree. One night I heard what sounded like a low-key party downstairs in the kitchen, so I went down to see what was up. My landlady, who's Vietnamese, and a couple of my roommates who are from India, plus another roomie who's also from Vietnam were working on a huge jackfruit. And it was just a half of one. I was invited to join in helping to pick the edible part out of the shell and artichoke-like insides, and got a taste of it. Like canteloupe, but not drippy with juice. Not bad. I mean, the thing in its whole form must've been like over a foot and a half long, and a foot in diameter at least. I went online afterward and learned that jackfruit can weigh up to 80 lbs.; I don't recall how tall the trees get. But I know I sure wouldn't want to be standing under one when a fruit came off!

Right now we're in mango season. The ones that are too high for the mango rustlers will drop and splatter, leaving a sticky mess. They weigh around one pound. If you happen to be under one when it falls...
