Last night, it was sprinkling a little bit as I was in PI Location training, with the other trainee driving, I was getting out to greet. I stood in the doorway a second enjoying the water drops, when the other driver complained that I needed to get on board, and I responded that I was enjoying the rain.
The lady sitting behind him looked at me, laughed, and told me how it wasn't rain. I asked where she was from, and it was Portland, and even
Beaverton, a suburb city. I am from
Tigard. If you check the links, you'll see where she lives in one map, and where my parents live in the other. Yes, I know the maps have quite a few common features.
Casually covering my nametag, I decided it was time to mess with her. I asked her to give me the name of the street on which she lived. She named one I knew, and so I asked her to close her eyes and visualize the world around her house. I started naming things, generally at first, then getting more and more specific until I named the cross street. At that point she opened her eyes disbelieving what she was hearing, and I pulled my papers into my lap so she could see my nametag. Then, she laughed, partly out of relief, I think. I assured her I couldn't read her mind, and was just taking advantage of the opportunity of being from almost the same neighborhood and having had friends as a kid in hers.
Then, I decided an icebreaker was needed, so I started a conversation about the differences in the weather between Portland and here.
There are three things I love about the rain here: 1) It cools things down, 2) It's fairly short-lived, 3) It causes this mass exodus from the parks during which time I like to go in and go on the E-Ticket attractions over and over and over and over and over and analyze everything I can. I'm enough of a nut that I went on Rockin' Rollercoaster last Tuesday 8 times because there was no wait and I wanted to "study" the launch mechanism. Of course, the music makes that difficult, but still enjoyable :D:
