In a traffic court where I once worked as a prosecutor, the chief judge and I had a code to tip each other off when we were going to be dealing with in-duh-viduals whose light bulbs were missing a filament. Just getting a ticket was not enough, you had to show some serious stupidity either in what you were ticketed for, or more likely, what you said to us.
The codes? The basically stupid were labeled "TDTD" -- "Too Dumb To Drive." The real special cases got a "TDTL" -- "Too Dumb To Live"!

The area I lived in had a similiar deal going where the cop would circle the serial number on the ticket to tip off the judge. This cries out for a smart defense attorney to catch on and get a lot of convictions reversed and a bunch-o-bucks refunded.
Don't game the process. You will get caught one day.

Forgive my lack of clarity, but there was nothing unethical like that at all. The comments were never that direct -- we'd never even tie it to a specific case or person, and certainly no specifics of a case were discussed outside of court, and no secret signals in court. Just a word in the hallway as we passed: "We have a real TDTD this morning," or "What's the docket look like today?" "25 cases, with 2 TDTDs and 1 TDTL." It was up to the judge to figure out which of the defendants I was referring to! (And it usually wasn't difficult! :) )
