LA MARQUE, Texas — A man blamed is blaming a low-flying pelican and a dropped cell phone for his veering his million-dollar sports car off a road and into a salt marsh near Galveston.

The accident happened about 3 p.m. Wednesday on the frontage road of Interstate 45 northbound in La Marque, about 35 miles southeast of Houston.

The Lufkin, Texas, man told of driving his luxury, French-built Bugatti Veyron when the bird distracted him, said La Marque police Lt. Greg Gilchrist. The motorist dropped his cell phone, reached to pick it up and veered off the road and into the salt marsh. The car was half-submerged in the brine about 20 feet from the road when police arrived.

Gilchrist said he doesn't know if the car was salvageable, but in his words, "Salt water isn't good for anything." He says the man, whose identity hasn't been released, was not injured.

Yeah right, a pelican. :D:

Some people shouldn't own expensive stuff.

And that is why it is now illegal to use a cell phone or any other gadget in your hands while driving in Ontario now. Bluetooth only. If only they would ban those gps units that people mount right in the centre of their line of sight. They drive along staring at the screen, not the road !

Heh. Not unless the Pelican called him and made him drop the phone when he was trying to answer. :D:

Another example of 'multi-tasking' gone bad. A few years ago,I got into an argument with someone about doing weird stuff while driving. My statement was,"It's called 'driving',not operating a motor vehicle while doing other shit".
This last spring a 17yr old girl was texting her friend, crossed the center-line,driving head on into some poor 45yr old gal who was just minding her own business going home. :( (gets off soap box)
Hopefully the guys insurance will cover this mess (doubt it :twisted :)

Which is why this -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnHvgzXOwNU -- is such a powerful PSA. Very soon my 15-year-old will have a driver's permit, and I will be showing him this before he takes the wheel.

Very good Wombat. The Az legislature 'was' thinking about this but decided against it. "We don't want to interfear with anyones personal freedoms". Last I remember was driving is a privilege, not a right.
I guess someone famous will have to die before they really do anything. :(
What the hell does a $2mil car got that makes it worth that much.

Man, that wood make the guys on "Top Gear" cry...

(If you not familiar with Top Gear, it's a British car show that even non-car enthusiast can love. It comes on BBC America..)

Hopefully not! Maybe he will learn a lesson. If the insurance company has to pay out that much it is sufficiently large to change the statistics on their payouts which will lead to rate increases.
