RIP iPod

The third stage to recovery is realizing that life is too short to worry about small stuff, and just do what you want!

The fourth step is trying to figure what the hell everyone is talking about. Excuse me while I go listen to my 45rpm singles.

As odd as it may sound, have you tried to throw it without too much force against a carpeted floor? My 2nd gen iPod gave me the dreaded sad iPod icon.

Rather than brute force I tried reformatting in Disk Utility and reloading the iPod OS. That worked.

I then synced the iTunes library to the iPod. It gets about one third done and I hear a gawd awful grinding noise. The iPod freezes up and I get the folder icon followed by the unhappy iPod icon.

It looks like the hard disk has had a major media failure.

The Touch arrived yesterday. Wowsers! What a leap forward. I may buy a new drive for Old Faithful just to see if I can resurrect it.

you MIGHT also try the refrigerator trick.

when we are trying to acquire data off a HDD that has some reading problems, we stick the hdd in the refrigerator for about an hour, then pull in out hook it up and start acquiring sectors until it stops, then back in the fridge!

it is a slow process, but it works, especialy if you need the data on the HDD.

Nope. :D: We used Seagates with fiber channel that were inside of a metal cassette. Those suckers were heavy!

Too bad we are now using who is cheapest. I'm sending out way too many replacements for the Fujitsu's, Hitachi's, etc.

Even Seagate is suspect. We bought the most expensive drives that were QA'd up the wazoo to last forever. Meanwhile, some schlub off the street bought a Seagate from Joe Baggadonuts Deli and Data Emporium and saw it fail within a year.

its a last ditch effort to recover the data, if that dosn't work we open up the drive, take the platters out and put them in a new case.
