Another record set

Post by BRWombat » Sun Oct 25, 2009 3:27 pm

This is continued from the Vic Mizzy bereavement thread... It just didn't seem right to keep it there. I apologize in advance for blowing my own horn (or pitch pipe) here, but I did promise results...
BRWombat wrote:BTW, I'm about to head to Little Rock for our District competition. We perform around 1:00 tomorrow, and then sing again on the "Show of Champions" tomorrow night. Live webcast is available here (for a fee). I'll be back on here Sunday to give the results (sorry, my new job-supplied cell phone has no internet, so no Facebook updates).
I just got back home. The Vocal Majority won the District championship, which was not a big surprise to anyone, but we also wanted to send a message after our second-place finish in Anaheim. Barbershoppers all around the world watch for the scores of these competitions in anticipation of the next year's International, and we wanted to let them know that the VM wasn't planning on fading away just because of one setback.

We won with a composite score of 94.9, which is the highest we've ever scored in a District competition. And the highest ever scored in the Southwestern District. And the highest ever scored by any chorus, ever, in ANY District competition! :D:

Just to put it into perspective, the second place chorus in our District scored a 78.1. And the Westminster chorus, the group which won the International gold in 2007 and which will be our main competition in Philly next summer, won their District contest with a 92.5. It's going to be an interesting contest next year!

Oh, I have to share my favorite moment from the weekend. On Friday afternoon I had already checked in at the hotel in Little Rock and had picked up my convention name badge from the registration desk and was returning to my hotel room. Three or four other barbershoppers and I got on the elevator with an older oriental couple, who had luggage with them and had obviously just arrived. The conversation went like this:
Man: (looking at us barbershoppers) Is this some kind of contest?
Barbershopper 1: Yes.
Me: It's for Barbershop singing.
Man: Ohhhh, Barbershop singing. (pause) Do you have to be a barber?
Me: (after the laughter died down) No, it's just the style of singing.
Man: Oh, okay.
Barbershopper 2 (who was very bald): You don't even need to have hair! :D: :D: :D:
BRW, if you don't blow your pitch pipe, no one will. ;) Love the barber conversation. :yourock: :congrats:

You guys should have sung some elevator music. Maybe something like I want To Take You Higher with the boom lacka lacka lacka in four part harmony. :D:

Funny, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone did that. There's singing everywhere at these conventions, and I lost track of how many times the elevator doors would open to a group of guys already on board singing together. My room wasn't super-close to the elevator bank, but many times while I was in my room I could still hear singing when an elevator stopped on my floor!

Oh, and it was a Dallas sweep this weekend -- the Rich-Tones chorus (a women's chorus based here, we used their rehearsal hall several times in preparing for Anaheim) won the Sweet Adelines International championship in Nashville. This was their fifth win.

Three thumbs up for the Wombat! Hey, don't look at me like that! Don't make
fun of me if my hands don't look like yours. Yeah! We have three thumbs, yeah! :aliens: Don't make me hurt you with them! hehehe...
Yeah! That's the ticket! Yeah! And we are chronic liars too!

Actually I wish I had a ticket to Wombat and his cohort's performance. THAT would have been THE ticket! Many homages to your greatness, my silky throated warbler!

Big Hoots to Wombatster!

Yay You!

It really is me, the Drive-By Disney Princess Susi... ;)

Love you all....this was a drive-by congrats brought to you by the Inner/Outer Space Federation of Three Thumbed Aliens! YES! We are in your galaxy and we are here to help. Anyone's furniture need dusting, the three thumbs come in handy when pushing a dust cloth across a shiny wood surface, gets more dust everytime! We would be real good in a Three Stooges movie where we could not only poke both eyes, but the nose as well. :D

Several years ago, I think in Kansas City, there was a Mensa Regional Gathering in a hotel. Also in the hotel was a SPEBSQSA meeting/competition.

The heads of the two groups got together and declared that name badges from either group were valid in any function (other than pre-paid meals) of either group.
