You tell 'em, Shorty! Last night on WSRE, one of our local PBS TV channels, there was a well-done program about the Gulf Islands National Seashore, narrated by Ken Burns. I'm not sure if it was part of his National Parks series, but it was produced very recently. They highlighted the recent visit to Pensacola by the King and Queen of Spain, and they showed the 4-masted sailing ship Elcano, which is a training ship for the Spanish Navy that recently visited Pensacola to help commemorate the 450th anniversary of the founding of PCola. Very interesting program.Shorty82 wrote:Like I said, a lot of people make that mistake. I grew up in that area so naturally know a bit more about it's history than most and I'm also proud of the area's history.
Pensacola is known as the City of Five Flags as five different governments have flown flags over the area in it's history: Spain, France, Great Britain, the Confederate States of America, and the United States. It is also the Cradle of Naval Aviation as it is the home of Naval Air Station Pensacola, a primary flight training base and has the Museum of Naval Aviation onboard (I love going to the museum). Fort Barrancas and the first lighthouse built by the US are also there. One cool thing of Fort Barrancas is that during the Civil War it was held by the Confederate Army while Fort Pickens (across Pensacola Bay on Santa Rosa Island) was held by the Union Army and the two forts exchanged cannon fire at one point in the war.
Sorry for the history lesson, like I said I love the history of that area.

Thank you Shorty for this history. You know I love history. :) Pensacola beat my 1769 Ca. roots.Shorty82 wrote:Actually, Pensacola was founded first. It was founded in 1559, but abandoned in 1561 after being destroyed by a hurricane. It wasn't refounded until 1696. St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the US but Pensacola is the oldest European settlement.

Because let's face it - most people just look weird naked.ktulu wrote:If most American's think like me (and they should), it's not that I am uptight about nudity, I'm just uptight about the people who choose to go naked.

I went with a group of friends to the nudie farm in Poinciana a couple of times (we did NOT shed our clothes...it was art fair day). Good God, if you ever need to boost your personal body image, that's the way to do it. Let's just say there are no hardbodies there...plenty of soft ones tho'.

You probably drink Olympia beer. It causes Tumwater tumors.

Shorty,
I'm interested in place names. Do you know where the name Pensacola came from?
Ms. M.

Re: Excuse me sir, where are your clothes?
Shorty, not hijacking your history info. Adding to it. :D: Ms. M. The Spanish named the area Panzacola. This is an Indian name. Not sure if there is a meaning. Much like our O C Niquil (El Niguel) which was a Native American area. Niquil went through a name change when it was an old Mexican Landgrant. Panzacola was changed by the French to Pensacolle when France controlled. England took control & changed to Pensecola abt 1763. Shorty will be along to correct me & update.Ms. Matterhorn wrote:Do you know where the name Pensacola came from?

I believe it was first used in a stationary store promotion. Buy a pen, get a Coke, which some marketing whiz compressed into Pens 'a' Cola.Ms. Matterhorn wrote:Shorty,
