Our family has a book written about its founding members and the history and genealogy runs all the way from before the Mayflower up through my grandfather, and includes a picture of our family crest (something with doves on it - evidently we were a peace-loving family).

Look at those "doves" carefully. If they have no feet, the are actually "martlets", and the lack of feet could suggest a branch of the family too junior to inherit any land, or a traveling soldier without a home.
