I was an SG today

Post by Ms. Matterhorn » Sun Aug 23, 2009 9:35 pm

DH and I went to DLR today. Going into the parking structure, I moved to the lane farthest left because it is always the shortest. There was one lane to the left of that, but I could tell it was closed. There was a long line, probably 15 min. A bunch of cars were cruising into the far left lane, but they would get all they way to the front, realize the lane was closed, and try to merge right. This was severely backing up my lane and I was so irritated.

So, this huge black SUV from the left lane tries to merge in front of me. Being irritated and knowing that the driver zoomed into that lane way before I got in line, I determined that she was NOT going to get in front of me. But I finally had to let her in because it looked like she was going to hit my car.

Anyway, I felt like a complete SG when I pulled up to the toll booth and the CM told me the driver in front of me had paid for my parking!!!!!!! ($12!)

But I have an AP parking pass so I just told her to pass it along. I felt bad about it all day!

But DH and I had a great day at DLR and managed to visit both parks. Next time I will be nicer. A humbling experience.

Rode the Mark VII monorail orange. The driver was funny so I told him so.

I wouldn't necessarily classify it that YOU were being a SG, just someone who'd had enough of other SG's that you reached the point of "I'm not going to take it anymore" overload.

The person who cut in front of you was the SG who must've realized that they were the one being the SG and atoned for it by paying for your parking.

I see the "wrong lane merge" all the time. I'll be driving into Boston and there are HUGE signs starting 1/2 mile (or more) before the toll booths saying that the left 2 lanes are for electronic toll passes only, and cash lanes are the right 2 lanes. At certain times traffic will be backed up on the right. There will ALWAYS be people who stay in the left lanes all the way up to the toll plaza, and then try to cut right and nose their way into the line of traffic waiting for the cash lanes.
Of course us drivers with the electronic tags who're cruising along in the left lanes then have to negotiate our way AROUND these idiots who are no blocking the other lanes and causing a traffic hazard... I very much doubt those "line cutters" are paying for the toll of the person behind them...

What I think happened was the SUV driver was practicing doing a good deed; there is a movement which I think is called pass It On, where people do things like pay for the next ten people on the toll road, or pay someone's entry or parking fee, or pay for someone's check in a restaurant, etc..

But I can understand how you might think they were being an SG; you're so used to looking for them, it's like you're on overload, or if you will, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I can relate, because when I worked at Knott's, I would snap at someone, when they weren't being dumb. And I would feel bad for a long time.

But frankly, I kinda doubt someone was atoning for trying to cut in front of you by paying your parking fee. You might want to pass the gift along; most people who have been blessed this way typically do. Just a thought.
