What is the deal with people on the Internet?
I know that this topic seems random and sudden, but recently I've been thinking about how some people conduct themselves online. Especially some of the unofficial Disney communities online. (I'm speaking in general, I am NOT talking about this site.)
When people think of "Disney" they tend to think of family friendly things and "magic" and "pixie dust" and all that, but lets face it, the Disney online community has some of the meanest, nastiest, most insulting bigots ever.
Its insane, I have seen people get personally attacked and belittled just because they had an opinion that someone may disagree with. And why, why is it such a sin to be positive?
When you get right down to it, I really think that its because people take advantage of the anonymous nature of the Internet. After all, in theory a person can act one way online, and then act completely different in real life.
Of course, that just makes them cowards; they hide behind their computer and insult people all day long because they feel like they can get away with it.
The bottom line is, that kind of thing really sickens me. Now I admit, I can be a sensitive person and some of the things that I have experienced online have really gotten to me in the past. People don't seem to realize it, but words can be very powerful things.
That is part of the reason why I really don't look at most message boards anymore. Besides, some of those online Disney communities are borderline obsessive.
So, I apologize for this rant, but I really would be interested seeing some thoughts on this.
This can't be the status quo can it? Is that all that the Internet is? A venomous place for cowardly people and bigots to insult one another because they could never act that way staring someone in the eye?

I tend to agree, they all act as masks where people can lie, cheat, hate, and do whatever without getting caught cause no one knows your real identity.

Yes, Disney "fan sites" have a tendency to attract a number of unbalanced people or at least bullies. We see tons of bullies at the parks and resorts here at WDW.Disneyguy85 wrote:I know that this topic seems random and sudden, but recently I've been thinking about how some people conduct themselves online. When someone does not think twice about speaking to you nastily telling you how much better they are than you. "Well *I* am a DVC Member!" when told they cannot do something on a DVC or resort property. They are just nasty entitled bullies.
Or when a father has no problem THROWING a double stroller at the Magic Kingdom at another father, on Main Street after the Move It, Shake It, Celebrate It parade for some perceived infraction of parade viewing space. The second father's back was to the first BTW. You know you have bullies. Oh, and an assualt charge coming.
I could go on and on. Bottom line, just cause you like Disney does not mean I should like you. While I am entitled to my views and you your views, many feel that they are the expert and you are an idiot. Or worse.
I no longer deal with those other sites. And rarely deal with even this one. There is too much to do to let people like that get under my skin any more.
I wish you luck on all that.

The strange part is,that they (boards X,Y,and Z) pretty much have the same rules as here. Attack the post, not the poster. Some times it doesn't work out that way. They turn into real pissing matches, until the mods shut/lock down the thread. One board is notorious for this. That's why I spend most of my time here.
(besides, there are 'certain' people I just 'love' giving a rough time to) :D: (hides in the closet next to the frig)

Yes, I have pretty much sworn off all other message boards.
That decision started back in early 2008 when certain things happened at a certain board that made me finally say "That does it, nobody respects me here, I am not going to take this or be a part of it anymore"
Unfortunately, since then there have been times when I have let my guard down and did participate in some Disney blog comments sections...Big mistake.

True, and it just shows how SGT has awesome mods who actually enforce the rules and a community of friends determined to stay friends. Many times here folks will agree to disagree rather than disrupt the pleasant atmosphere, and on the rare occasion things get personal, the mods are quick to shut it down. I'll occasionally go to other boards to look up info, but SGT and Facebook are about the only places I regularly post.darph nader wrote:The strange part is,that they (boards X,Y,and Z) pretty much have the same rules as here. People are definitely less civil on a lot of Disney related boards. On the one hand some over enforce to the point where all you can do is spout pixie dust and rainbows, and other places people seem to have back lashed the other way. On another Disney Board I started going to after some one here posted about it, I've got about a half a dozen people who seem to have an extra hate for me because of this: 8^)
Luckily the head mod there usually tells them to shut up about the smiley. Unluckily I got on the wrong side of a debate recently there, so now it's kinda hard to tell the smiley haters now from the people who hated me because I didn't know solid peanuts aerosolize on airplanes (which whoops... my bad, they totally do.)
It's interesting to note a major difference between places like here, and the places that people act like total jerkwads. There are a whole lot less Sock Puppets here than any of the places that get out of hand. Sock puppets ad an extra layer of anonymity, when you can have multiple accounts, you can spread the jerkassery around to different "people" and still maintain a "nice" account and be liked.

I think you hit it right on the head, Wombat! One of the things I -love- about SGT is that it's a group of friends, a group of real people who offer the same respect online that they do when you meet them in real life. I've been lucky enough to meet several of my fellow SGTers when I travel to WDW, and they are as fantastic there as they are on the boards.BRWombat wrote:True, and it just shows how SGT has awesome mods who actually enforce the rules and a community of friends determined to stay friends.
There is very, very little of the crappy "I'm better than you are." here (if any at all) because respect is something that hasn't been forgotten on this board.

Pardon my total cyber-ignorance, Mayonnaise, but what does that symbol mean? Surely I can't be the only one who doesn't know. Thanks.Mayonnaise wrote:People are definitely less civil on a lot of Disney related boards.
