If it was a blackout, he either paid, or came in on another ticket. If he paid, did he pay full price or the $40 upgrade? Or am I all wet and is Disneyland guest relations outside the gate?
Judging from the article, it seems that they just spoke with CMs at the ticket booth window, and also a guest regulation window outside of the park. None of the CM interaction that the author wrote about took place inside the park.

You know, what really gets me is that the author flat-out refuses to admit that he and his wife were ignorant for not reading the rules and for acting really, pretty selfish. He acts like they were poor victims.

Just got back from a stay at the Disneyland Resort. I have NEVER seen so many birthday buttons. My daughters b-day is next week and she wanted to go for her sweet 16, so we took her last Tuesday-Friday. She wore the button though, and our family wore the I'm celebrating buttons. CM's told my daughter happy birthday and asked what we were celebrating, we answered her 16th birthday. It was all fun, I dont understand why people think they need free stuff. Although we DID get some free flour tortillas. :) score. Man up, if your wife wants a 69 gift card for Disney buy her one.

LOL - That's right! I worked 6 "That's what she said"s into my Walk in Walt's Footsteps Tour that day and won $5 from my lead. I was lucky though to only have a teenage boy and his dad on the tour, so they thought it was hilarious.

That's what she said! :)

Alright, I know that this thread is several weeks old, but I was looking at that blog again and someone in the comments section had this question;

"Question…my family and I have AP’s. I am taking my daughter on her birthday, which falls during spring break (a blackout date for our pass). I get that I will have to pay the $40 for my pass to work that day, but can I pay the $40 for her to get in and then redeem her birthday pass for the birthday FASTPASS? Spring break is such a busy time, and the FASTPASS would be worth more then a free entrance. I will be happy to pay the $80 to get her and I in if we can get this benefit. I cannot find the answer to this question on the Disney website. Thanks!"

I thought it was an interesting question, does anyone here have an answer for it?

If a passholder's birthday falls on a blockout day and the passholder pays for the blockout day ticket, s/he is eligible for one of the alternate gifts. So, yes the daughter will be able to get a fastpass for the day.

Those are the instructions we get in the booths. I tried Googling the question to see what info passholders are getting. The only answer is that the passholder (found here as the last question in the FAQ) will receive the free ticket which s/he can then use to upgrade the pass. That upgrade then allows them entry into the park.

There are so many interesting permutations. I'm now sympathetic to the travel writer's wife's impulse to cry.

I believe the guest could go to guest relations and get the birthday thing without entering the park and thus avoid the blockout day. It is worth a try and they do allow that for parkhopper ticket holders.
