It's Rated R for a Reason!

So I know I'm just a Guest, but I feel like people here would understand me, so here is my rant that no one here at home understands:

Hubby and I went to a 1:00 PM show of The Watchmen. AWESOME MOVIE I feel, that isn't my issue. My problem is this. Just before the lights went dark, in walked a person fallowed by 3 young children. Our theater has put into place a "no child under 6" rule in place for rated R films, but I don't think 12 is old enough to see some of the stuff that's in this movie. *Now if you haven't seen this movie and you don't want to know anything about it stop reading now!

Okay, the 3 children could not be any older than 10 years old, and after an atempted rape scene, you could here "What is he doing to her, I don't get it" or during a graphic sex scene one of the kids kepts going "Ewwww." I made a coment to someone here and they said I was over reacting because "how was the parent to know that the film wasn't sutible for kids".... ahhhhh Duh! Its rated R! There was very graphic violence, full frontal nudity, and a lengthy graphic sex scene. This film was also done by the same people involved with 300 and Sin City, it may look like Batman and Wonderwoman in the previews, but it is not a movie for kids!

Now don't get me wrong, I've been able to watch rated R movies since I can remember... but that was in the privacy of my parents home, and AFTER they had already seen it to make sure it was okay! I still remember my parents telling me to cover my eyes during the sex scenes in many movies. I even got in trouble when I thought it was okay to say something from a movie just at the house that was a few choice swear words.

So I guess my whole rant is, why do people think rated R films and M rated games are okay for kids to take part of. Or how about parental advisory stickered music? I was a DJ for a little bit and had kids in kindergarten tell me I could play Eminem because they had the cd at home...WTF??? I became an aunt in November and I will never allow my neice to watch, listen or play any of that stuff. Anyone else feel the same? If not, I'm waiting for a decent reason this is okay, (don't worry, all answers welcome I won't argue) :p:

I saw Watchmen on Saturday and also enjoyed it, and I have to agree. It isn't a secret that this movie is borderline NC17(in fact if it was rated by someone from my area it would be rated AO, but that is another story). The worst are the parents who attempt to sound like they care by asking if it is appropriate for their kids and then when they hear everything they say it is okay no matter how bad it is. I suppose that is a good thing about living in Utah, you don't need to worry about that so much because no one will go see rated R movies in the theatre just in case someone they know is there(I have the right to mock this, because that used to be me before I grew a brain of my own).

Wow... that reminds me of when I went to see the tour of "Avenue Q" and a mother had her 9 year old with her, and was flipping out in the lobby because he wanted a "It Sucks to be Me" t-shirt. If she couldn't handle that... I was just waiting to see how she reacted to "Loud as the Hell You Want (When you're Making Love)" unfortunately they had orchestra seats, and I was in the nosebleeds, so I never did get to see how long she lasted before dragging him out of there.

Back on topic... I really don't think the sex scenes needed to be that LONG. I'm not a prude or anything... but do we really need to see every position they tried? I'm against movie sex scenes as soon as they cease to be plot relevant, which was like... oh, maybe 2 minutes in to that one. We got all the information we needed at that point... now... if it kept going for a while and then something HAPPENED... like she called out the wrong name, or the ship's autopiliot went wonky, that'd be something. But yeah... after that it just gets weird in a theater full of hundreds of people. If I want to watch porn... I'll watch it at home.

I for one am not a prude... no matter how hard my mom tries.. I just cant be one. I am Redneck hear me ROAR!!!

With that said.. I do believe that parents need to take a more moral and active role in the rearing of their children. I dont blame the movies, video games, or music.. I blame the parents for not giving two bits about their childrens mental health.

And i wish more people in SLC develope a brain.... oopppps... inner monolouge comming out again....

There have been numerous studies done since the 1950s to determine the effect of sex and violence in movies and on TV on people, adults as well as children, and in every case the link between what one sees and how they act is clear. Basically, it's monkey see, monkey do. I can think of several cases I've read where what was shown to sample audiences had a clear effect on how they later reacted to a slight case of frustration, but they're pretty lengthy. The shortest case I have in mind is where this one rural community was unable to recieve television signals because of the hills surrounding the town. When a signal repeater was put on the hilltops, the people in this town could get television programming. Most people expressed an appreciation for the educational and news programming, as well as weather reports, but some were concerned when their kids started asking for guns so they could shoot people with them.

The G, PG, PG-13, R and X/NC-17 ratings have been around since the late 60s; why don't people learn? I also remember that the PG rating used to be GP, for General audiences, with Parental guidance, until they switched it around. There used to be an M for Mature rating, until it became PG-13. The theater managers are supposed to enforce stuff like that, and the ticket sellers are supposed to not sell tickets to people who have kids that are too young to see the picture. Those ratings are there for a reason! I bet there were alot of parents who let their kids see that 'World Police" movie with the puppets, and it was what, R? With lots of graphic sex scenes? Don't people read reviews, which explain why a film has a particular rating? Sheesh....

Went to see the revival of Sweeney Todd on Broadway a couple years ago. We were way up in the last row of the balcony (small theater, thankfully). In front of us was your typical Mom & Dad with two kids, neither of which could have been older than 10.

They never returned after Intermission... (I mean, what ELSE do you expect from a show whose subtitle is "The Demon Barber of Fleet Street"?!?!?)

I'll bet that they went to the TKTS booth and bought tickets to whatever was available because they just HAD to see a Broadway show while they were visiting the city...
