He should have it down to an artform on what to do as he approaches the border. And again, he should know that U.S. Customs officers shouldn't be expected to be polite on request. It would be nice if the Border Patrol was polite, but anyone could have a bad day. Tear gas, handcuffing, half a dozen guys jumping on him for just asking for "please"? Excessive force, right there. But the guy spoke to the guard, and said he seemed to be sorry for his actions.

But really, at most the guard should have said, "Turn off your engine, please." The first time.
The border guard should have used verbal judo.

Invented by a guy that needed to sell his book.

I am sorry to disagree with those that THINK it was excessive force. I would like to point out that you have read/heard less that half of the whole story. The inspectors report is missing. And they ALWAYS do a use of force investigation after an action of any kind.

Suffice to say that when the "victim" tells his side to the press, he SAYS that he simply requested a "please" If you read all of the different versions, one account actually says that he "communicated" he wanted a please. Sounds like something is missing from his account.

lets think about this in terms of Stupid Guest. He was being a VERY stupid guest to the border inspector.

Note the fact that the inspectors are trained to detect anything abnormal about a persons behaviour when they present themselves for inspection (which he did by driving to the border crossing) it is not unusual to try and "mask" reactions to direct questions and/or exibiting signs of nerviousness, by becoming commanding to the inspector, asking him to be polite, asking him to show his badge and credentials, etc. etc. (yes, they are trained to look for those signs)

The request to turn off the engine is usually the very first thing that is requested, and is POSTED in signs, both in english, spanish, and (if I remember right) french at the norther border crossing stations.

The reason for that is to prevent "drive off's"

he is lucky that he only got pepper sprayed. I have seen people pulled out of the drivers window, its not pretty.

And lets also think about the fact that he says he crosses the border two to three times a week. guess what, unless he drives a long way out of his way, he is going to be dealing with the same people two or three times a week. My guess is that he is going to be sent to secondary inspection for a looooong time.

Not to bright. actually pretty stupid, and he is a guest in our country....STUPID GUEST!

next time just turn you stupid engine off and let the inspector do his job.

sorry, rant over.

continue with your RUM refreshments!

hehehehe

Well said, GP.

My opinions are mine and mine only. If my opinions are the opinion of others who happen to share whatever my crazy views may be, then fine, but it's not because I represent them in having my opinions. Got it?

It is not a rant and is well said.

The dude did the same thing last year to another patrolman. RULE ONE of dealing with law enforcement is that they rule. The dude was ordered to turn off the motor which is standard for even a broken tail light, EVERYONE has to turn off the motor.

Publisher's Clearinghouse: You have won a million dollars.
Dude: wow
PC: We need another picture of you opening the door.
Dude: Not until you say please and are well mannered.
PC: bye bye and have a nice day, please.

One's manners do not count when a dude with a gun is asking you to turn your motor off.
