I actually watched that last week in my history class. I don't think it is offensive at all, you just have to remember we were fighting a war against Germany when it was made. It won tons of awards too.

This cartoon is available on the the Disney Treasures DVD Disney on the Home Front. It is unedited. This is a great DVD if you can find it (it has been out of print for some time). It also has the anti-Nazi cartoon Education for Death (intense) and the rare Victory Through Air Power. The latter is actually a feature cartoon.

That is the problem with a lot of, so called, "banned" things today. It comes from a lack of knowledge of history. The same thing could apply to "Song of the South". Without a real knowledge of the times it was created, it just looks offensive to a lot of people. In reality it is a look back at what was. Knowing what was helps not repeat those ways.

I saw that in History of Animation class. It's not as bad as you'd think, I mean... to be banned.

I remember seeing a clip of that and some others, in a History Channel (?) show called "Hollywood goes to war" where they showed various movie stars at the time, and cartoons that depicted Americas foes in a VERY un-pc light. but then again, PC was not 'invented" back then.

I remember another one of Donald joining the Army, and he is sent to fight. He encounteres a Japanese soldier, and it was pretty sterotypical at the time!

I once saw a clip somewhere, that showed Donald meeting a Hitler version of himself.The Hitler Donald extended his hand/wing to Donald, apparently urging him to become an ally. But then we see a close-up of Donald's eyes,in which swastikas appear; Donald rebuffs the invitation to join the Nazis, and blows the Hitler Donald away with his machine gun.

What most people would see as being "controversial" would be the depiction of the Japanese tuba player. The other band members were obvious takeoffs on Il Duce as well as Hirohito, and Hermann Goering, Hitler's #2 man.

If you mean a look back at racial attitudes in the 1940s, then yes. If you mean a look at what life was like on Southern plantations post-Reconstruction, then uh no, not so much. Really, really not so much.
