Layoffs....

Post by Doctor McKey » Fri Jan 23, 2009 1:07 pm

I am starting to worry about whats the cards may hold for me and the wife.

Disney announced the other day that 600 positions will have to go with positional buy-outs for their jobs. Most of them are management and admin level jobs, with 300 of them being in the Orlando area. Also said that if the lay offs don't "fix" the economic scare is not quickly corrected by the buy outs, then they will consider laying off the hourly employee's.

A day after Disney announced this plan, Universal announced that they are going to cut 70 positions in the management and admin area and then move to the hourly hosts/hostess if needed.

Er...where was this, in the Orlando Sentinel? Most things I've read so far have said that they don't have anything planned for Frontline Hourlies at the moment, but it can't be ruled out in the future.

Either way, I think now's a good time to make sure everyone's aware of the relavent clauses in their Union Contracts. Generally, the company does have to give you advance notice of layoff, and MUST go by Seniority (i.e., the most recent hires have to be the first to go).

Here at the DLR, Master Services and Park Food & Beverage (Unite HERE Local 50) RFT Cast Members can elect, by seniority and based on business needs, to be restatused to CR status in lieu of layoff. Master Services CMs, depending on their length of RFT service, can retain their RFT seniority for scheduling purposes, in this case.

Because the Senior Exec V.P. in charge of red fireworks will then mix blue and red together and get violet.

Unfortunately, that is the norm at many large corporations. Those people usually have been with the company many years, someone "likes" them, and they speak the "corporate vocabulary."

The sad fact is that in most large corporations, once you become a "manager," you are usually layoff proof.

No manager is every truly "layoff proof" (unless he's married to someone).

For true layoff-proofing, do what I did: become a shop steward. To dump me they first have to lay off all but two others in my department/job! At that point the place would essentially be closed.

True, but Polaroids rolls off the tongue easier and says so much more.
