No Videotaping

I hope that you park professionals can enlighten me on videotaping various attractions. Every trip it seems that the rules change. In 2007 I video'd Soarin' but not NEMO. This year I video'd NEMO but was told no video on Soarin'. Is there an official policy or does each CM decide the rules? I have no problem with a no Video or picture policy, just be consistent.

Soarin has always been no video taping.

Nemo used to be no photography/video taping. However, it changed over the summer. Now you can take pictures (no flash) and video tape (no external lighting).

Just thought I would chime in for a sec....
I usually listen to the opening speach from the cast members. It drives me bonkers when people use their flashes in dark rides because it can really ruin the experience for the younger kids. I remember when I was 8 and I was on Peter Pan for the first time, I had never even heard of a black light. So when I was flying above London in a pirate ship and my clothes were glowing I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. If someone was using external lighting in any way, I wouldn't have that memory.

The other thing I noticed on you tube is there are people who use their night vision on their video cameras and they don't realize that there is a light that comes on. As a favor to other guests, if you use "night vision" double check to make sure a light doesn't come on. :)

The light you see in a night vision camera is typically not visible to the human eye, it is infrared. I do suggest that if someone wants to use night vision and it is okay to video/take pictures, make sure the displays are turned off and make use of the view finder!

Thanks for the clarification, Joanna. I was going to video Nemo when I was there in October, but the recorded announcements were contradictory. The first announcement said no flash photography or external video lighting. The second announcement said no photography or video taping period. I'm guessing the second announcement didn't get updated.

That is correct. It hasn't been updated yet (or wasn't in Aug anyway).

It was updated when I was there in December. I took a bunch of flashless Photos. The lighting on the show is great, so you really don't need it. I also got mpegs of all the "That's my Dad" reprises. It's my favorite bit... made me cry.

I saw that show 3 times when I was down there... the first two in the same day.

We do allow videotaping in Sounds Dangerous. However people cannot use the display, only the eyepiece viewfinder.

Of course more than seven minutes of the 12 minute show take place in total darkness,

Please note that most times there are physical rather than legal reasons not to tape or record. In other words there may be some copyright violations that would occur if recordings were allowed, but Nemo has a physical reason - the same as using flash on the Haunted Mansion. The effects occur behind glass, and a flash of video light would reflect off, ruining the effect and creating a pretty lousy image. Heck, I've been in planetariums (planetaria to be precise) and seen people flash for a picture. Not only have they temporarily blinded the entire audience, but they will go home with a picture of a white dome. So as far as lights and flash go, when in doubt, go without.

Oh I know. I wouldn't dream of taking pictures of a performance unless allowed (especially at a show like Voyage- flash pictures can be so dangerous). I have been involved with theater, and know how dangerous using the flash can be.
