Oh my God! I had just mentioned the fire in the Santa Barbara area the other day on a thread and now there are 3 fires all over the area! I cannot believe what I am seeing on the tube. It is horrendous. My heart goes out to all who live there. It is so sad to watch the enormity of these fires.

I saw this morning on CNN that the officials ordered 12,000 people to evacuate from ANAHEIM! I would guess that probably is the Anaheim Hills area, but sooooooooo....close to the actual cities. And I hear there is a big fire near Sylmar as well. This is trerrible. You all just went through this not a month ago or so.

Those Santana (Santa Ana) winds are blowing fierce too, up to 75 mph gusts. They say it will continue to blow today and calm down this afternoon. They blow IN from the desert from east to west bringing all that hot dry air down those canyons and hills....I pray for all of you. Have any of you been affected? The smoke is probably pretty heavy down there. My prayers, my friends.

Note all the winding narrow roads up in the hills and mountains.

Buildings on the Westmont College campus have burned. Among the destroyed buildings: 14 of 41 faculty homes; Bauder Hall, which housed the psychology department; the physics building; and two of four buildings in the Clark Hall residence complex.

We have the Sylmar, Corona, Chino Hills, Orlinda, Yorba Linda and Montecito/Santa Barbara fires. I heard Anaheim Hills might also be hit and I know there is a massive mobile home devastation that only took minutes to wipe out a whole community. Sylmar is surrounding San Fernando Valley and next to the 210 freeway. Major paths of travel are being impeded and my friend took hours to get to work and got lost in Azusa.

IT IS BAD HERE. I live far from any fire but Santa Ana winds will bring us the fires from the east and the normal winds will bring the fire stuff from santa barbara area. My car is covered in a fine layer of ash and some bits of charred leaves. You can at times find a bit of ash on the windshield that shows the leaf print. The air is fucked up so bad that I have the car on the front lawn and I could evacuate mom south to San Clemente if the air does not clean up soon. Eventually at this rate mom could have breathing problems from the heavy smoke and ashes. I could stay in a motel for about 3 nights max then we be broke. I am cleaning out the car tomorrow and it would not be hard to pack and leave in minutes. I have a supply of all Mom stuff like diapers for the month. I hope we get rain or clean air as a lot of people will be getting sick, yesterday morning it was smelling of firewood burning.

I am pretty sure I got some wheat damage or am eating a ton of fatty foods. I am sitting hear and trying not to breathe. So far I have headaches and my nose and throat are off. I hope it is gluten in the restaurant food. Sugars are way too low for me also. My typing is bad so probably wheat but i am really worried about air quality.

Sounds bad Churchy, please be careful and take care. Your health is VERY important. Don't wait too long if the ash and smoke get too heavy! My prayers are with you and your mom.

I also know someone who lives in Yorba Linda. I don't knnow how she is faring with the fires.

We are OK over here although we could see the fire crest the hill in the distance and hubby had to go WAY around to another freeway to get home
from work yesterday....seems to be moving away from us now. :)
Hope everyone else is ok, I told Grumpy yesterday he wouldn't run into any fire from Ontario to Anaheim and POOF, here pop up 3 or 4 more fires!

Yesterday was horrid. I was helping someone move and being out in that just sucked. We had a lot of people come to the hotel because they were evacuated from their homes.

I did take a few pictures of the sky and our "So Cal snow."

One of my BIL's sons works at DLR, and he says the ash is falling pretty badly. I can see the smoke in the distance from where I am, but I don't see any ash. In today's paper I noticed that San Diego was the only place that had good air quality; every place else was moderate. We have to close the windows and run the A/C because of mom's breathing problem.

The only problem living on the beach was illustrated recently when we had astronomically high tides with localized flooding.

I wonder how business is doing at DL and DCA with all the smoke and ash in the air. If it is nasty in Burbank 40mi away, it is horrible in anahiem.
I can imagine all the SG comments, "Can't you do anything about the air?" ...
Reminds me of when I worked at Uni had was standing outside in the smoke when griffith park fires were burring.

I was at the Disneyland Resort yesterday, and earlier in the day it was horrible. Bits of ash falling and the sky smokey.
It wasn't until later in the day that it got better in the area.

Both parks seemed pretty empty for the most part.

I had to cancel going to see "Bolt" at the AMC at Downtown Disney because the freeways were too congested. But this is nothing compared to what others are going through.
Some of my co-workers live in Corona, Anaheim Hills, and Yorba Linda. I hope their homes are OK. I'll know tomorrow.
One of my dad's friends lost his home in the Sylmar fire. :(

Those Santana (Santa Ana) winds are blowing....

Sorry gang, pet peeve of mine that I just haven't gotten over, but:

"Santa Ana Winds" are strong winds that come to downtown Los Angeles out of the east; from the direction of the city of Santa Ana.

"Santana Winds" are the horn section of Carlos Santana's band, "Santana".

They don't blow at all ... except into their horns. :santana:
